Very nice and friendly staff. Not a massive fan of Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine I'll be honest but food is good. pork lobak is kinda like a ngor hiong but it was made with a thicker coating sort of like a crust instead of a thin beancurd skin, but very nice. filling wasn't overly strong with what I think usually is 5 spice powder (which a lot of other place usually do) and was very soft and juicy. it also doesn't have weird chunks of soft bone/cartilage which was nice. paired nicely with sweet chilli sauce.
Wanted to try something new so I ordered marmite pork and I guess it is not everyone's cup of tea but and I think I have had better. Sauce was simply marmite - sweet and savoury with that fishy-ish umami taste. I wasn't sure what was wrong with it BUT I think when the dish was first served, the sauce was too runny, only when the dish has cooled down slightly, the sauce thicken but then the pieces of fried pork have already soaked up some of the sauce and it became soggy. Also had a couple pieces that was 90% fat and like 10% meat. I think it could have been made better. just my opinion tho would love to hear what other people think!
The fried tilapia as what you would expect, crispy and very solid chunks of meat. but the nonya sauce THO. sweet, sour Assam with a good kick of spice (think it was both ginger and fresh chilli blend). Very very good! Went very well with my coconut rice which was super fragrant too! fish was fresh even the meat around the head and belly area barely had a tinge of fishiness.
the most important thing in an asian restaurant I think is the rice. dishes would be nothing without a nice bowl of rice. Gotta say though both their steamed white rice and coconut is up to my very high standards for rice so 5stars + extra points for awesome rice.
Wish I lived a bit closer so I could come back more often to try their other dishes!! one of the nicer restaurants definitely reminds me of the...
Read moreTried this for the first time today and we had a mixed experience. We ordered the Fried Kuay Teow and Fish Fillet Noodle Soup.
Unfortunately, the Fish Fillet Noodle Soup wasn't as good as many others in the area. It lacked flavor, punch and was quite bland. This dish done properly is tangy and spicy owing to the use of pickled mustard greens and ginger, but there was barely any of either in the broth. Also disappointing was the fish - we picked it up within 10 minutes of placing the order and we live about 3 minutes drive away. Yet the fish was cold, tough, rubbery and clearly not freshly fried. I aim fairly confident that it was reheated in a microwave or fried earlier and not reheated at all - there is just no way that freshly fried fish would lose that much heat in such a short time especially compared to the other dish we ordered. Both my wife and I actually had a mild upset stomach a couple of hours after lunch.
On the bright side and to end on a positive note, the Fried Kuay Teow was very good. It was flavorful, fresh and very authentic with a good "wok hei" (the quintessential "charred aroma" of any decent FKT/CKT). The portion size was also generous. Also both dishes were reasonably priced.
I hope that this review encourages the owners to continue to focus on quality rather than taking shortcuts, as it's clear that there is potential here if they put their minds to it. My hope is that they take this feedback onboard so they can continue to flourish...
Read moreThis is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne, if not the best.
The Yuan Yang horfun is the best in all the Malaysian restaurants I've been to in Melbourne. It is a mixture of the normal stir fry kwaytiao and deep fry rice vermicelli. It is very unique and some would call it Sha Horfun. The wok hey is amazing and the sauce is so flavourful. The contrast between the smooth kwaytiao and crispy fried vermicelli is so well balanced. Would have taken a picture to showcase if we weren't so hungry lol..
I've also ordered the cereal prawns and they are heavenly. The batter is very light and not oily while the cereal is so crispy and flavourful. The tiger prawns are so fresh and of a good size.
They serve teh tarik as well and it is properly brewed the same way as how it is done in Singapore and Malaysia. The only fault I can find is that the teh tarik is served in a teacup and not the glass that we are so familiar with back at home.
I would bring our Singaporean/Malaysian friends who miss hawker food back at their home country to have a meal here...
