Read moreThe pre-brewed tea was too strong. I like to have control over the brewing process and I had to ask for hot water on the side to dilute. The 'plain' croissant was glazed with sweet coating. If I had wanted a dolce I would have asked for one. Overstaffed and overpriced. The seating was okay but a south facing window with canopy didn't promote natural light.
I revisited the establishment on a Monday recently, on recommendation, and having forgotten my first experience of four years earlier. Near the door I observed a sign giving me a choice of proceeding directly to the takeaway bakery section, else waiting to be seated, the latter of which seemed to code for: "Move on if you do not have lots of money and shallow pockets". An attentive waiter led me to a table and took my order, which amounted to a plain croissant and long black coffee. It was served in good time, along with a small glass of sparkling water, knife and serviette. Responding to a query of mine, he explained that the café sourced its bakery products from the Glenferrie establishment on a daily basis. When I came to pay at the counter I was somewhat stunned by the bill of $13.80. I did not ask for a breakdown but imagined it involved the croissant being charged at around 9 bucks. A number of days later I visited the Glenferrie Via Porta (a takeaway place), purchased a croissant for $6 and ate the same at a sit-down café further up Glenferrie Rd (the very pleasant Short Straw which has a similar decor and ambience to Via Porta, Mont Albert, and where I once had a dish with smoked salmon as the centre-piece) with a long black, which came, as a matter of course, with a glass of sparkling water, for $4.50, bringing my total outlay to $10.50 for the same product I’d had at the Mont Albert establishment. I am left wondering whether the cashier at Via Porta, Mont Albert had been in error. It certainly stands as a personal record for this food-drink combo. Anyway, the croissant was fresh, crisp, well textured, non-glazed and pleasant to the palate, whilst the coffee was...
Read moreVia Porta Eatery-Deli is one of the most charming restaurants I’ve visited recently. Tucked away on Whitehorse Road in Mont Albert, it’s a place I might have missed if not for a friend’s recommendation.
Upon entering, the design immediately captivates. The terrazzo floors exude excitement, complemented by soft wooden joinery and crisp white tablecloths. A mezzanine at the back adds depth and character to the space. The interior was thoughtfully crafted by Studio Esteta, led by co-director Sarah Cosentino, who is also one of the siblings behind Via Porta. The design draws inspiration from the narrow alleyways of Southern Italy, featuring earthy tones, textured limestone counters, and “crazy paving” floors made from recycled stone offcuts .
What I love most is that Via Porta operates all day. Whether you’re in the mood for a daytime meal or an evening dinner, they’ve got you covered. Plus, their deli section offers a variety of products, including Italian imports, perfect for some gourmet grocery shopping.
I dined here on a Thursday evening a couple of weeks ago. The service was impeccable; we were promptly attended to, and the staff frequently checked in to ensure we had everything we needed.
The menu is extensive, making it a delightful challenge to choose just a few dishes. As a duo, we opted for the Kingfish Crudo and Eggplant Arancini to start. For mains, we selected the Pappardelle Norcina and Kipfler Potatoes. Every dish was exquisite, bursting with flavor, and served promptly.
I’m eager to return for another dinner and am equally excited to explore their brunch offerings. Via Porta truly offers a delightful dining experience that combines exceptional food with a warm,...
