In an age of Instagrammable bakeries this is a friendly reminder to not overlook longstanding masters in the baked good scene of Melbourne.

Firstly, you will realise that this place smells like BUTTER 🧈 which means they’re doing some proper baking inside. The menu has stayed practically the same in the last few decades for good reason - they have nailed the classics!! Get their mini tarts - the shiny fruit toppings make them look like jewels and they’re so delicious. Their mini eclairs are also spot on. We also recently got a chocolate birthday cake for under $50 and it was jaw-droppingly tasty. Their savoury treats are great too. How can pastries that look so simple taste this good - I don’t know how they do it!!!

Bitterly disappointed . I have been a customer of Hilltop since it opened and it was always brilliant. Since the expansion I have experienced signs of increasing change to the quality I had enjoyed. Having moved away I came back especially to purchase a Christmas cake and some fruit mince pies (have always raved about these). Couldn't wait so tried a bit of everything today and so glad I did.

Sadly the cake is extremely dry, no currants or peel to be found and only a few sultanas, cherries yes. Not pleasant to eat . The fat used in the fruit mince tarts has been cheapened with an unpleasant coating left on your tongue. The pastry too was not cooked through and the minuscule bit of filling dry and almost tasteless. The filling on this one was a little more generous. An iconic Melbourne cake shop. Yes they do get busy and during busy times there is a queue outside the doors. The wait is worth the while and thorough testament as to the quality of service and produce. All of my clients receive Christmas gifts from Hilltop, and all rave to me about how much they love the goodies they receive. Orders are necessary during peak seasons and events, and is necessary to avoid disappointment in not getting what your taste buds so desire. I have tried almost everything that they have to offer. I cannot list what is my favorite product as I am yet to try anything that I have not found delightful. I do think that their pastry is superb and with real, yes real butter, much better than any other cake shop I visit. Good work...
