Cooee has the potential to be one of the finest dining experiences in Perth, and their food and ambiance should be complemented by exceptional service to match, which they really fell short of this time. During our most recent visit, which was a birthday occasion, we were left disappointed despite the stunning views, a well-curated wine list, and generally delicious dishes.
While the food was great and the staff were friendly, the overall service didn’t align with what you’d expect from a restaurant of Cooee’s standing and price point. The evening began with a rather off-putting experience when we ordered a bottle of wine, the staff member assigned to open it appeared inexperienced and struggled under the guidance of another colleague. They proceeded to do this right next to us for what felt like forever. This situation, compounded by the awkwardness of the moment, left us feeling uncomfortable and anxious. To make matters worse, despite the wine being placed in a way that staff can attend to our glasses, we were never once offered any attention to our glasses, which felt like a missed opportunity. We don’t mind staff being trained, but perhaps it would have been better doing this pre-service, not when serving the customers.
One of our dishes were forgotten, we brought this to the staff’s attention, we were assured it would be addressed, yet there was no follow-up or apology. By the time we went to pay, the missing dish was included, and instead of taking immediate responsibility, the staff member seemed unsure of how to handle the situation, asking a colleague to verify the error rather than consulting a manager or offering a straightforward apology. This was disappointing, as it left a somewhat unprofessional impression on an otherwise special occasion.
Lastly, despite the presence of air conditioning, the restaurant was uncomfortably warm throughout the night. The door was left open in the high 30/40 degree heat, creating a difficult atmosphere to fully...
Read moreNo welcome on arrival. Said they didn’t have my table. Then when they found it no apology. Waited to be seated with no introduction or smile. Blocked views, 3 waiters asking multiple times if we wanted table water, clearly no one communicating as to who was waiting on which table. The staff were stressed no smiles and running about creating a stressed environment not a relaxed lunch they boast on their website. Lots of banging glass at the bar. Had all the room around our table yet my chair was bumped multiple times! Food was priced different on the menus to what we paid. Over cooked fish that was drowning in Salt. Gave me strong stomach cramps after a couple small few mouthfuls and taste of salt was over breeding, had to stop eating. Chips came out lukewarm and over cooked. Some even burnt. Was meant to be French fries but clearly are not. They ran out of ALL juices. Ridiculous. Non-drinker out for lunch and ended up with cold chips, stomach cramps from the SALTIEST fish and No juice. Kids were thirsty and they only had tap water to offer. After all the initial water offerings, no one came to offer top up when we actually needed it. Then to top off the flys and aircon not cooling, sore back from the hard chairs. The waitress offered to ask chef cook more fish for us ‘what so I could eat on my own and make everyone wait for me after it took so long for our meals to arrive!’ Not to mention the cramps from all the salt I tasted already. The Beef tartare came out looking like a side dish with little flavour and crisps. It’s not Dome Cafe! Pay premium price expect premium service and food. Would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone or for a birthday like we did. View 10. Atmosphere...
Read moreWOW!!! Brought the family here to celebrate the wife's birthday after a recommendation. Definitely book before you arrive, just in case. Parking entrance on the river side takes you through a tunnel under Mounts Bay Rd to the adjacent building.
It was an interesting walk along the long hallway peppered with historic pictures of Old Swan Brewery, and Cooee is located right at the end. The atmosphere was classy, and we had a corner table inside with a nice view of the river.
Service from the wait staff was just excellent, and we had a lady serving us who constantly checked everything was going well. She also came back with answers from the kitchen about our dietary requests. When she noticed our mains were taking a while, she told us that she would go check in with the kitchen to see where our order was.
Food was very tasty and nicely presented. I ordered some oysters and grilled zucchini to start, with the tenderloin special for mains, and the Frangelico affogato as a dessert. The oysters came with a nice red vinegarette, and the zucchini had a mint pine nut sauce. Dipped my side of fries in the zucchini sauce so as not to waste it. The tenderloin was done medium rare with fried kale, and had a touch of I'm guessing bearnaise sauce. The meat had a nice chargrilled seal, and being both juicy and tender, exploded with flavor with each piece I gobbled.
Our friendly server brought the dessert menus back after clearing our table, giving us enough time to decide what we wanted. When the wife's dessert arrived, 2 of the staff came singing happy birthday with a sparkler, which was a really pleasant surprise.
Thank you Cooee for making this a most pleasant dining experience. Highly...
