There are few worse feelings than recommending a place to your friends and then it turns out to be as godawful as my most recent visit here. Oh how i longed to re-live the days where i would take my lunch break at Toyworld and come down to Abbeys for a delicious chips and gravy. I often mention that i view things through rose-tinted glasses; well today those glasses came off... then they were thrown on the ground and crushed by the heavy boot of reality. Let me start positive though: Lots of older people come here which is nice. I like the simplicity that seems to come with old age. The way they take pleasure in the small things in life is refreshing. I met an older gentleman here and he was really friendly. He was a customer though - would be nice if the staff were as pleasant as this man. I hope he lives a full and happy life.
At the time I ordered I was 24. By the time food came out I'd had my 30th birthday. Only a mild exaggeration but honestly the longest wait i've ever had for a BLT and strawberry shake. Forty-five painfully long minutes of my hour long lunch break. My colleague ordered the loaded chips and a thickshake. Thickshake causes brainfeeeze (as it should) AND comes with a straw. Loaded fries came with burnt cheese which tasted burnt most likely due to it being such. Chips do NOT come with a fork. Perhaps on another day when staff weren't "too busy to grab you one" (yes that's a direct quote), service might be decent but from my experience today they missed the mark and not just by a little bit. I get that you're busy but my not so humble opinion is that any venue should be able to serve as many people as you can seat. So with seats to spare on this occasion you'll forgive me for not accepting the 'too busy' excuse. Not even a hint of an apology for the wait times. May seem picky but with a small apology you can really dig yourself out of a hole. More positives: Bird was cute and also large. Cage was quite small, also bird did not talk so like whats the point? Large fishtank was cool but not particularly clean so aesthetic was kinda ruined? Food was okay but nothing special. In my haste to eat before returning to work I forgot to get photos so attached is a pic of an empty...
Read moreFirst time at this beautiful Cafe but will not be going back which is unfortunate. The atmosphere, decor etc for a Sunday Brunch is perfect. They have that part spot on and it's a pity the rest didn't match. The coffee and the barista did a lovely job, hot and strong so if your thinking of just a coffee and perhaps a sweetie you might get away with your visit. My partner, parents and I ordered the eggs Benny which was served on a hash brown with no toast. My partner comment on his Benny wasn't too bad but wasn't the best he'd had, edible and I ordered bacon and eggs. I sent both my plate and my mother's back to the kitchen as the eggs were not done as we requested over easy. The toast was warm bread, yuk, and the bacon was greasy, undercooked and didn't taste right. My husband ate my tiny piece of bacon I paid extra for. It might have been the bacon, maybe smoked which I don't like or it could have been anything from the fat they cooked it in to what they'd cooked previously in the pan that gave my bacon a taste that didn't sit well with me. After requesting nicely for my eggs to be cooked over easy a second time as I'd requested when ordered, the came out absolutely mashed, dry and hard. I'm pretty sure the cook took out her vengeance on both my mother's plate and mine after we'd sent them back requesting the eggs be flipped to cover the look of raw egg on one side. Horribly done. So disappointed as I'd heard some great things about this...
Read moreSeems like the cafe has had a series of improvements both inside and out. The atmosphere is pleasurable and gives off the cottage vibe. The coffee was a 5/5. Decent size, not burnt and not over extracted. We ordered the BLT and eggs your way (add bacon $6 and add a hash brown $2.50). In total $51.10 for two meals, a coffee and a sparky soft drink. When my meal appeared, I paid $6 for the smallest serving of bacon I’ve ever had. Grilled tomatoes still fresh, eggs hardly scrambled. The hash brown had so much oil in it, you could recover a full vat of oil from it. The BLT had a simple request. No Bbq sauce, retain the mayo. Tomato sauce on the side. My partner received her meal and they put tomato sauce on the sandwich, no mayo, and no tomato sauce on the side. Simple misunderstanding. We politely asked for it to be changed. The chef rolled his eyes, grabbed the plate and slammed it down in the kitchen. My partner embarrassed returned to our table and sat down, where an amended meal appeared in front. Now cold, the tomato sauce had been scraped off and replaced with mayo. Bread soggy with old tomato sauce and under toasted. Lettuce used was the stump of the plant. We ate, we won’t return. Hopefully the visual changes to Abbeys cottage can be seen in their chef staff and food...
