Real Aussie pub experience. The food is good with ample helpings. The building is historic for the area, being 150 years old in 2024. Large outside area with plenty of shade. Pool table and online betting/ Keno also regular events and live music. The pub is dog friendly but be aware that the resident pub dog is definitely not other dog friendly, so check for his whereabouts before bringing your dog into the bar😉

A short time ago, I strode into the Cooktown Hotel with a friend for some drinks. It was a friday evening and early on, the locals didn't like us too much for encroaching on their turf. However, we are amiable fellows and we won them over with stories about fishin and shootin. We all became great mates and it turned out to be one of the great nights out of my life. Sadly, as often happens, the long arm of John Q Law arrived at closing time to break up the party. Neck minute, I find myself being marched outside on trumped up charges of breaching covid protocols. As they pushed me towards the paddy wagon, I made a break for it and bolted away. For the next hour, the coppers chased me through the streets and alleyways of Cooktown. Cooktown doesn't have many streets or byways as it turns out, so they were always hot on my tail. Thankfully, one of the staff from the Soverign Resort was headed home and saw my plight. She pulled up next to me and told me to get in...she knew a great hiding place. The hiding place turned out to be in her bed. She hid me there all night. Man, she really knew a thing or two about hiding!! Anyway, the coppers lost my trail and I was able to sneak back to my own lodgings the following...

Very expensive for what you get($90/night). A very small room with air-conditioning if you paid the premium. No TV. One power point. A shared bathroom where the doors don't close or lock and the lights don't work. Also the soap dispenser on the one hand wash basin was empty for at least 3 days of my stay(not great in general or for covid). It gets very loud in the nights due to the rowdy pub underneath with no attempt at sound proofing. And every person who stumbles to their room late at night sounds like an elephant walking by (wood floors). Only pros are the rooms are clean and tidy. The food is good and the...
