EDIT 2024: Now located in South Perth. This is my go-to spot for roti canai. No comment on the other dishes yet.
Was here for brunch on a weekday morning and was a tad bit disappointed with the food.
Ordered a fair few dishes among two other friends including The Big Sarapan, Nasi Lemak, Roti Telur, Eggs on Toast with Smoked Salmon and a couple of drinks.
I was not entirely sure if I was served the entirety of The Big Sarapan. The menu described the dish with “assorted kuihs”, but it turned out I was given two curry puffs which both appeared to be frozen cold as I bit into the middle of the puff. The kitchen was nice enough to fry me two new ones. The hero of the plate would definitely be the GF (Gluten Free) spiced fried chicken — well seasoned, nicely spiced with a pleasant char on the skin. Sedap! The rice was average, have had better Nasi even from the packet ones! Sambal was a little too sweet for my liking. Price wise it’s fairly value for money with the large portion.
The roti canai (on both dishes) was well cooked. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Probably one of the better joints serving roti canai in Perth.
Teh Tarik. 2 out of 5. Personally prefer much stronger brewed black tea over the overly-sweetened taste some eateries serve. I ordered mine less sweet just in case! Froth? Not so much 😕.
Service was above average. I understand when a restaurant is at full capacity and serving up orders left, right and centre, but I had to stand at the front counter for quite awhile before a server could attend to my cold curry puffs! Wait time for hot food was not too bad though.
The cafe is located off Albany Highway in a small house-turned-shophouse and thus not very spacious, but gives a nice, casual hang out spot.
There are a couple of parking spots right in front of the cafe with wheelchair ramp/access up to the front door. If full, there’s always street parking (but make sure to check your ticket’s expiry time, as the City of Victoria Park isn’t afraid to hand out parking infringements).
Would definitely return to The Sarapan solely for their roti canai (And their spiced fried chicken) if I am...
Read moreLike one of the previous reviewers, I drove past the Sarapan a couple of times before finding it. Really need to put up a logo or a name on the building so no one will miss it! There's a parking lot in the back, go down Banksia Terrace and there's a few spots along the street as well. If they're all full (was all taken when we got there), keep going up Banksia Terrace and there's a hotel at the end of the street with free 2 hour parking. Service was ok, the lady at the till had RBF but was nice when conversing. The atmosphere was decent, like a modern Cafe vibe.
Now I should talk about the food. We ordered the nasi lemak and the Big Sarapan. With the nasi lemak, I would give it a 7/10. They gave a huge portion of sambal, which is nice to see. It was sweet and a bit spicy, perfect for me. The chicken was coated with a spice rub, which is different to what we get back home - which is basically deep fried with a little spice/marinade. It's not bad but different to the original. The rice would be nicer if it was coconut rice, if it was coconut rice, I couldn't smell/taste it. The sambal was the hero of the dish.
The Big Sarapan was huge, it had a bit of everything. Again, plenty of rice, plenty of sambal, huge roti canai, big roti kaya. The roti canai was crunchy but not fluffy, came with chickpea curry - should be chicken curry. Needs a bit more chilli. Roti canai 7.5/10 - more chilli in curry, chicken curry instead of chickpea curry and maybe more butter/air in roti canai prior to cooking would be 10/10 - it is flavoursome. The roti kaya was actually very pleasant, soft bread in the middle, crunch on the outside, just enough kaya - 9/10. I think if I were to go again, I would order the Big Sarapan for two people, it was huge and we were full just looking at it!
All in all, a worthy experience. Brings back memories of home. We will be back again to try the other food that you have on offer. Oh, the kopi tarik (pulled coffee) was...
Read moreNot really my type. Funky and a bit hipsters. Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah. Taste - Sambal too much sugar not because pedas or not pedas but it's make the sambal like a bit dark. Coconut rice not enough santan, very the budget. Ayam goreng, nice texture but no enough hygiene. Can see the from the texture, if raw before being fried it's lot of dirt and blood need to be washed before you roll it with ingredients. Services - Menu to be served to the table have to wait for almost 30minutes. Receptionist aka waiter's. Two person there, should be one in the beverage and one take order. But both ladies, try to be employee of the year so the job is mixed up until 4 or 5 table left unattended and untidy and dirty. Location - Prime area suit for those who want always to snaps of pictures to be posted in social Instagram. Price - Reasonable price with the provided portion.
Teh tarik - Quite good (which make me to give the a big higher point in term of rating).
Note : (Because the excitement feeling at first stage then turn down to disappointment, no...
