Wow It’s been a while since I’ve done any kind of review, but just had to tonight. Just cannot recall having Thai that I enjoyed as much as that.
My 10 year old lad had a football carnival over the weekend, and we ended up being recommended to Thai Tong by the Airbnb host. The thing that just stood out was the consistency of satisfaction with absolutely each bite.
My lad and I were just constantly making faces at each other in ongoing appreciation. calamari, was so much more than calamari. The sauce was just something else. A pop of tang with a velvety texture, and the accompanying salads with little bits of crunch all added to the flavour, not just as decoration. Dim sims, you must chop them into smaller bits, dip them in the cultured sauce it comes with, and again, enjoy the salads and extras as enhancements Red curry lamb was just another level to any we’ve had before. Every single bit had that constancy of full flavour. Just everything you good for in a sauce. Not watery in any way, just had to finish off the sauce with the remaining rice And the pork belly stir fry. Every bit of it just worked. We made sure we cut the bites of pork belly up. So you could try some on their own, and some with the accompanying fare. Which again, just enhanced the pork belly to another level.
Just a well run place in general. We even got to have a bit of a chat to the owner who was very welcoming, and obviously understands the essence of what Thai food is all about
Just don’t know how we will cope with other Thai establishments. The bar is just set too high. And we live 2 hours away.
We all go to restaurants to enjoy food, prepared by others for us. And in that respect. I just can’t remember it...
Read moreGood. Good flavours, good service, good setting, good everything. Different. Different flavours and prep., different presentation. A beautiful blend of herbs and spices, with obvious attention to what does what with what (salt, fat, acid, heat, but also liquid and solid, crunchy with soft, dispersed notes so every mouthful is different). Oh no! I'm turning into one of those foodie people. Let's get back on track.
Not how you might expect a Jungle Curry to be, so if you want everything to be the same everywhere you go, get thee to McThai. How marvellous to enjoy the meal and ask what's in it while paying the bill, only to have our host pause in silence (oh dear, you don't know?), before they rattled off a comprehensive list including seasonal varietals - I knew it was the Holy Basil! I used to grow and eat vast quantities of European basil (to the point where my mouth became temporarily numb - try it if you have a toothache). I then made the mistake of growing and eating a vast quantity of Holy Basil. Um, lets just say I wasn't safe to drive or operate machinery for a while. But I was surprisingly clear about the path to enlightenment (I just closed the door and turned to face the enormity). Sadly, I learned nothing and is still a idiot. The quantities used here are well within safety limits as it's a few leaves here and there (not the whole woody shrub - yes, Holy Basil is a woody shrub) and the flavours are amazing, but it did give me flashbacks to a...
Read moreHad a takeaway from Thai Tong the other night. The service and over the phone experience were great. However, that was the only positive of the experience tonight.
Firstly, all of the vegetables were raw, unsure if they were even cooked at all. The chicken cashew nut serving size was great with a plentiful portion of cashew nuts. However, there was absolutely no flavour, and the chicken was tough and dry. Very disapointing. There was no redemption for the Massaman Beef. It was dry and grey, and there was absolutely no tenderness. If it couldn't get any worse, the potatoes were raw. The chilli ginger had no chilli? There was absolutely no chilli,
For $130 dollars for 4 mains and rice, I would most definitely recommend going elsewhere. Maybe it was an off night and issues with takeaway, but I would not recommend this restaurant. Your toilet will thank you. If you are charging an additional $8.50 for rice, which at any other restaurant is $4 at a max, you know where their...
