This is kinda two reviews.
A few months ago I came here with a mate after a hike. We both got the pepper steak pie and sausage roll. The pie was rich and tender with the right balance of pastry flakiness and butter. The sausage roll was the best Iâve ever had. Moist and delicious. Perfect mix of seasoning and flavour. And the pastry again was buttery and flaky.
So I said to my partner we had to go here. So we did. Yesterday we ordered the steak and gravy pies and sausage roll. The pie was a bland, gelatinous mess with very little steak. It tasted like a microwave pie and was lukewarm. We were given fresh pies before you ask. They had just been placed on the cooling trays. The sausage roll was a mere shadow of its former self. It just didnât work. Gone was the fine mix of seasoning and onion, replaced by what seemed like your average roast chicken stuffing at Coles.
My partner doubted everything I said about this place after talking it up so much.
Itâs disappointing that somewhere so busy can deliver such a poor experience.
Agree with others. Theyâre definitely understaffed with only one till and person managing orders. A place as busy as this needs another front of house staff member. We waited around 15 minutes and the line wasnât that big at all.
The atmosphere is non existent. It clearly had a rustic feel but is now basically just an empty concrete building with worn walls and floors. The chairs are IKEA items that need replacing. One basically collapsed while my son was sitting on it.
You pay really god money for a pie here. $10 really is top dollar for a takeaway pie and to be honest, $5 wouldâve been too much for what we had yesterday.
I really hope it was just an off day as I said, the previous visit was much better. Maybe theyâve had staff changes. Probably not our first choice next time...
Read moreWe'd never heard of Leura until our Blue Mountains tour pulled into the little town for a lunch stop. Bakehouse wasn't the place designated for lunch along the way, but we checked out a couple other reviews and decided to hike the extra few blocks to check it out.
The outside's pretty unassuming, and so is the dining room. The pies, though, they speak for themselves. We saw so much variety in that little shop that we started calculating whether we had enough time on the ground for the trip to come back again to try more selections.
We held back on that impulse, however, and limited ourselves to 2 savory pies and one sweet. We'll be darned if those weren't the best meat pies we've had on 4 continents!
Most especially, we will never forget the Kangaroo in a rich tomato goulash. We didn't see anything of its like anywhere else in Sydney (and we tried hard too). That ultra-lean meat was melt-in-your mouth tender and there was serious artistry in the veg and spicing that went into the rest of the stew to fill the pie. Then there was that buttery, flaky crust enfolding it all into a little dish of perfect, homey love that just warmed a body from the inside-out.
Good savory pastries are rare as hen's teeth back in our home town, and so commonplace in Australia that we almost started taking them for granted. The meat pies in Leura, though, were something so special that they'll be our first stop next time we fly halfway around the world...
Read moreBakehouse on Wentworth in Leura is a charming bakery and café that has become a must-visit spot for both locals and tourists exploring the Blue Mountains. Situated conveniently near Leura Mall, this establishment exudes a warm, rustic atmosphere that complements the scenic surroundings.
The menu features an array of freshly baked goods, ranging from classic pies and sausage rolls to an assortment of sweet pastries and cakes. One of the standout items is their signature sourdough bread, which is baked in-house and offers that perfect balance of crusty exterior and soft interior. For those looking for more substantial fare, they also offer a selection of sandwiches and salads.
The staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall inviting ambiance of the place. It's evident that attention to detail is a priority, from the quality of ingredients to the presentation of the food.
However, the café's popularity means that it can get quite busy, particularly on weekends and during tourist season. Finding a seat can sometimes be a challenge, and there might be a wait for your order. Additionally, the pricing is somewhat on the higher side, reflecting its tourist-area location.
In summary, Bakehouse on Wentworth offers a delightful culinary experience in a cozy setting. It's an ideal spot for enjoying high-quality baked goods while soaking in the laid-back...
