This cafe had become a favourite of ours, since they opened and we had become reasonably regular customers. However, in spite of the fantastic barista who works there, Bobby, I will never return to this cafe. Why? Because of the incredible rudeness of the owner! On Feb 9 this year (my partner's birthday) I rushed home from work and called in the Black Toque cafe on my way, hoping to pick up a cake, for his birthday. I arrived at the door of the cafe, which was, surprisingly, already closed at 3:49PM (even though their closing time was 4:00PM). The owner, Cindy, was still there, leaning on the counter, talkng to one of the pastry chefs. I knocked on the door and when she looked over at me, I made some circular "cake" motions with my hands and called out that I needed "a cake, please!". The glass cabinet which contained the cakes was, from where I was standing, full and all she needed to have done was basically put one in a box and take my money. As simple as that. But, instead, she made a dismissive gesture at me with her hand and stayed exactly where she was and continued chatting with the pastry chef. So that's how she feels about regular customers! I then went around to the Urban Grocer, also in Putney. Michael, the owner, went to a lot of trouble on his phone trying to find a cake shop for me; unsuccessfully, alas. Instead I bought a delicious apple and rhubarb crumble from Michael and, that evening, we had that, with icecream, as a "birthday cake". It was delicious! Thank...
Read moreFamily thought it would be a great treat to buy me a ferrero rocher chocolate cake for my birthday!
Out of the 7 family members who ate the cake, 5 of us ended up vomiting throughout the night and 2 had strong stomach pains.
The next morning we discussed what could have caused the illness. A couple had noticed that a particular layer in the cake had a smell that they could only describe as 'off', but it was only subtle and they hadn't thought much of it..
Upon opening the fridge the following morning, the 'off' smell was immediately obvious without even having to put my nose near the cake itself. It was foul, and immediately it went to the bin.
This is the first and only time I have ever been food poisoned, and it's a shame that it happened to what would have otherwise been a...
Read moreA very disappointing experience, service leaves a great deal to desire. As far as food is concerned, well a croque monsieur does not have béchamel on it that is for sure. The waiter insisted that a crocque monsieur has béchamel well NO a big fat NO. Then comes the coffee, well a bad version of a coffee really, bitter, water runny and hardly drinkable. To finish this experience I tasted a salted caramel crème brulée. It was closer to a sugar hit than anything. In my honest opinion, this venue needs to revisit the fundamentals of French cooking, and patisseries. The novelties it is trying to implement is simply not working, the flavor mix is incorrect and servers no purposes other than...
