Sadly, we should have checked the reviews before we entered. We were originally heading out to Camden Valley Inn, but we didn't want to sit outside in the cold so we detoured to Bohemian Euro to check it out since we haven't been since the original owners sold up and retired. This place used to be one of the best European restaurants in the area and a favourite amongst our family with a lovely old world atmosphere, now it's a sad down in the dumps. The only best thing left is the friendly waiter Michael and waitress Zoe who were there from the beginning, before new management took over. As soon as we walked in we knew the place was severely understaffed. Owner looked like he was running the show behind the bar, not greeting guests with a smile at all, just rushing. New blonde waitress in a pretty green dress looked very stressed and rushed as well, we could honestly tell it was a very busy evening with the amount of patrons and she was trying her best to accomodate everyone, she was polite and apologised after we paid for our meals at the end. The new little waitress with a dark greyish-blue dress who took our drink order appeared rude and gave filthy looks. Drinks.. ha! We ordered them (a litre of beer, 1 cocktail, 1 mocktail, table water and a small fanta) and they still hadn't arrive within 30 minutes of ordering. Took it upon ourselves to get a bottle of water and some cups from the tap near the entrance as we were thirsty. Drink order still hadn't arrived and our first entrees of 2 Langosh appeared. Oooh, we loved Langosh as it was one of the best here and I was so ready to sink my teeth in it... well... it tasted really awful! It was not that light and fluffy bread inside, just flat, dense and yuck. Couldn't even taste any garlic on it and it was like eating a flat frozen bread dough deep fried in oil. I felt sick instantly and regretted our entree choice. Drinks finally arrived, after our entrees were finished. Drinks should always come out first. There really should be more than one staff behind the bar to get drinks for the huge amount of patrons. Our two meals of schnitzel arrived for my mother and daughter and I was hoping the panko crumb would still be a rich dark golden colour as I was looking around at the other tables who had ordered it and it was just a pale golden colour. It certainly was pale, like it hadn't been cooked well enough. My daughter had a piece and the chicken in some parts were thick and slightly undercooked, I took a tiny piece from the end to give it a try. No flavour whatsoever and it was really disappointing. It tasted like a frozen chicken schnitzel you can get in a box from Woolies and fried. She didn't even finish the 3rd schnitzel as she began feeling sick. The salad on the side has changed, and she didn't get her favourite gravy on the side, she had to ask for it. My mother just happily ate hers as she was starving with no complaints. My partner and I ordered the large bauenschmauss platter. Our absolute favourite meal that is served here. Another shocking disappointment. The sausages didn't taste that good, the dumplings were mediocre in a tasteless mushroom sauce, they added those awful chicken schnitzels in the platter too (ewww!) and there was no spatzle and the sauerkraut felt cold from a jar. Pan fried potatoes, not the best like before. The pork knuckle tasted dry and chewy. We couldn't even finish our meal because it had no taste and scrumptious flavour. Our stomachs felt empty and our bank account went ka-ching. The meals were really overpriced for what they were. Pubs down the road offer amazing better quality food for less $$$.
Our once-favourite 5-star restaurant is no more and we won't be coming back. Ever. Our 1-star review should really be a no-star....
Read moreHad a hankering for a Jägerschnitzel tonight, and as I am now located far away from my usual go-to of Una's in Darlinghurst, I thought I'd see if I can find a local to fill the void.
Called and booked a table for two with ease. Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly with a friendly smile by the waitress and shown to our table without delay. So far, so good. The decor is decidedly old-world in the way of what a German or Bavarian pub might look like in the 70s or 80s. It's not an issue for me as I've had many a good meal in places that resembled this. It feels homely and friendly enough. As long as the food is good, I didn't really care about the atmosphere.
Well, this is where things started going a bit downhill. Firstly, the wait was surprisingly long considering that there were only around four to five other tables when we arrived at 6 pm. Our food did not come out till 6:40 pm. The only consolation was that the table next to us got their entrée five minutes before us, and they were already there before we had sat down.
Even this wouldn't be a big deal as we were not in a rush tonight for a movie or another event afterwards. We just decided to wait patiently for our turn in case the kitchen was short-staffed. As long as the food is good, it will be worth it. Disappointingly, it really wasn't. I tried in my mind to make concessions and not be overly harsh, but it was tough. Literally and figuratively. For such thin slices of veal, it was inexplicably tough - it seemed way overcooked. But what really killed it for me was the sauce. I've had lots of Jägerschnitzels in my time, and I have never had the mushroom sauce be SO salty. And I don't mind a bit of salt when the dish cals for it. I couldn't really taste anything else. I'm not sure why any dish would need this much salt, and I'm not sure if the chef had actually tasted the sauce during any part of the process. The Spätzle didn't help either as it was lukewarm and decidedly spongey and stale.
The pork knuckle my mum ordered was tender enough, thankfully, but it was also over-salted along with the similarly over-seasoned gravy. What looked like lightly-fried onion rings were barely warm and were tough and chewy. Don't know how that is even possible. It did not feel like it was freshly made at all. Were they reheated left-overs from the day before along with the Spätzle? I'm not sure.
I really had to force myself to finish the veal as I didn't want to waste the food, but I definitely regret it 20 mins later. I think my body didn't respond well to the sudden sodium overload.
Food options are a bit limited out this way, but we do try and support local places wherever we can. This was an experiment in trying something new, and maybe we just got unlucky that it didn't work out. It's been a while since I've left any reviews of any description, and I probably would have just preferred a quiet private word with the owner or chef on the night. But no one bothered to even check or ask us how our meals were. I hope this was just an unusual experience, and we just got really unlucky on the night. It was a little hard to swallow for nearly $80.00 with...

For some reason my review keeps disappearing.....
My wife, daughter and I went there for the Wednesday night special, order 1 main and get the other half price. The restaurant was not even a quarter full.
We sat down and ordered the Goulash entree for myself with a half Stein of beer (over $25?), my wife ordered a cocktail, the Camembert entree and the Pork knuckle main (about $60?) and my daughter ordered the snitzel main (about $25?). Guessing we had ordered $110 worth so far. I like German beer. Add at least another $30 to the tab as I would have had 3 more half steins, and the daughter was available to drive so the wife might have had a 2nd cocktail so add another $15. We now were spending about $155.
A few minutes AFTER we had ordered, the waitress comes over just to tell us we will not be receiving the 2nd main half price as per the advertised special because I was going to share it. It would have been a discount of about $12.50.
We had ordered 2 mains, 2 entrees and that's all the food we wanted between us because the pork knuckle is big. I told her to separate me from the bill, and offered to eat my goulash and drink my beer at the end of the table hoping they would see how petty they were being over $12.50
Meanwhile the Camembert and drinks arrived. That cost $40 right there. No doubt the goulash was being made so that's $55. We told the waitress to hold off giving it to us while the manager decided whether he really did want to upset us over $12.50.
Sure enough, the manager decided to throw out the $55 worth of food and drink they had already prepared, and give up the other $100 we were going to spend just to deny us that $12.50 saving of their Wednesday night special.
These people are a special brand of stupid. Insult the customer over $12.50 and give up $155 worth of business and alienate regular customers. Normally when we go there we have the family of 6 so conservatively we spend $250 to $300, and have arranged to meet friends and extended family there in the past too.
Well done saving your miserly $12.50. You really won that one. Probably patting yourselves on the back for showing us who runs the show, and denying us your advertised special because hidden conditions apply.
Well you enforced your hidden conditions, insulted us by sending the waitress back to tell us we would not be getting it AFTER we had ordered, and just before food and drinks arrived, and lost out on $150 bill to save your $12.50 plus repeat customer business.
You truly are a special...
