After lunch yesterday, we visited Bourke Street Bakery in Balmain and had the pleasure of trying their Ginger Brûlée Tart. The tart was a delightful treat, featuring a rich, creamy ginger custard with a perfectly crisp brûlée topping. The balance of flavors was exceptional, with the spicy warmth of ginger complemented by the sweet, caramelized top. The pastry itself was buttery and well-crafted, providing a satisfying contrast to the smooth filling. Equally impressive was the friendly service. The young lady staff (Thai speaking) who recommended the bakes was warm and welcoming, making the visit all the more enjoyable. Her genuine enthusiasm for their products was evident and added to the overall positive experience. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to try their pies.

Stopped for a quick snack on my way to visit someone at the hospital up the road. Convenience spot. As a connoisseur of meat pies, I thought to try one and I don’t understand why no one has just plain mincemeat pies any more? Nearly 8 dollars for a very bland tasting bacon & beer potato mashed topped combo. Paid in cash and annoying to get three $.50 coins is change. Petty I know but nevertheless annoying.

I have had inconsistent experiences at other Bourke Street Bakeries, but the products here are top notch, the coffee is made well and the staff are friendly. Standard pies are excellent too; great pastry, and full of chunky pieces of meat and vegetables. Always busy, and feels like a popular community spot on Booth Street.

I really wanted to love Bourke Street Bakery but their food & coffee is hit and miss. The vanilla and lemon ricotta baked cheesecake was a hit; it's to die for! Only available Wednesdays and Saturdays and worth scheduling in to your calendars. The porchetta roll had the right idea but sadly not enough roast pork for quite a big, doughy bun. The almond croissant was by far a huge miss; the pastry was dense and dry... It didn't seem like a croissant at all. There was no buttery taste, the almond praline was bland and there was a layer of uncooked dough on the bottom. Very unappealing. I had one excellent takeaway coffee last week and then an average one a few days later. It could be great; it's just not...

This is still the OG when it comes to artisanal bread and pastries; luckily, for myself, the items taste close to the same from the early days, and the bakeries look inviting, and are well-stocked so it's still a treat which unfortunately is less than it used to be as I have moved out of Marrickville now. However, I do find the staff who tend to fill the bakeries leaning on the 'I'm too good for this' side of attitudes, which really lets the brand down. I had a wonderfully unexpected positive experience at the Marrickville site yonks ago when David was visiting the bakery, and it just jars me that a lot of his staff are so haughty or uninterested. Please note: I’m speaking to female staff; the male...
