What a gem of a find this place was.
Quietly tucked away on a section of Bronte Road that I would not have previously associated with fine food; and very fine wine, Bronte Road Bistro gave me an experience I would normally expect from somewhere I had already been - and already loved.
We (myself, my wife and our toddler son), were dining early on a Thursday evening under the recommendation of my sister. We were most graciously welcomed and seated in the atrium-like area of the restaurant with the windows still slightly opened as a little breeze and the dusk light filtered in.
Jess, the better half of a dynamic owner/operator-husband/wife team, had us happily removed from our day-to-day to concerns with a delicious, French Pinot Gris as we struggled to eliminate options from the menu.
I finally decided upon the Confit Duck Leg with figs and my wife (as I knew she would) fell upon the Steak Frites with Cafe de Paris butter; we shared Prawn-filled Zucchini Flowers and melt-in-the-mouth Chicken Liver Parfait which was all the better for smearing on the locally made Iggy's Bread. Then, what with the 2007 Central Otago Pinot Noir we were in heaven.
Stewart, the other half of this most hospitable couple had won over our little fella with the Iggy's Bread and somehow kept him entertained whether he was stopping by the table to check on us and top up the wine, or just pulling faces from across the garden.
My wife loved her steak so much, I reckon if we went back 20 times she may not see another thing on the menu. As for me, I could easily hit the Duck & Pinot combination again, but will try to work my way across the menu and wine list a little more first.
The only downside was our curfew with the youngster, because as we were leaving, the guys sitting next to us were just being served dessert, and dessert wine....
We'll be back, and stay...
Read moreWe've dined at Bronte Bistro once already and come back for a friend's bday loaded of expectations. We did not have a great experience though: Apart from one waitress (I think she was south-American) the staff was detached and very serious. Food was good: quite simple and not too elaborated, but well cooked; nothing above an average meal. I asked for a lactose free meal as we were having a set menu for 8 people and have been told that I could have one of the 5 starters as it did not have lactose. I would appreciate another option but "Fine". Then the main came and with my surprise there was a yoghurt sauce right next to my spatchcock. "Fine" I went to the toilet and I could hear from the back of the kitchen the waitress who completely forgot about my lactose free meal being annoyed by my intolerance. "Fine"! When the bill was delivered and we found out that we got charged for 8 (as per our booking) even if we were 7 people at the table, we have asked for clarification as no one of the staff had mentioned anything in regards before the dinner commenced and as we did not get food for 8 people but for 7 only. The straight answer from the very aggressive manager (I believe he was, even if he shouldn't probably be working in hospitality at all) was: you booked for 8 you pay for 8 as I've to pay for the lights, the glasses, the bills and the staff. Just talking about ridiculous!! Very rude approach to the conversation!! However it ended up with 2 btls of free wine given to my bday friend just to confirm how badly they handled the whole thing. I'd have appreciated apologies...
Read moreFound this place on google, the photos of food looked great . So we thought we try it out . Ordered steak dish,2 kids meals and i ordered a fish for myself and showed the waitress the photo of a dish that I wanted. She said ok, and later she brings me out a completely diffeent fish with a very strong fish smell . I told the waitress this is not what I wanted and she said we are out of other fish. I said I'm sorry I can not eat this fish .
I also ordered a butter milk iceberg salad with nuts and dressing , when they brought it out it was half of lettuce on a plate chopped in big square pieces with nuts on the side . 😅I don't know why I didn't take a photo , maybe because I was very shocked.
My son ordered a kids chicken baked meal. When he cut the chicken through it was pink and raw inside . Chicken should always be cooked through.
Later looking at my bill I relised they charged me for one kids meal $40 and one $20 . They also charged me for a glass of wine $18 . A nice way of getting their money back for the fish I guess .🤣 After spending $171 at the Bronte Bistro me and the kids end up at McDonald's and were much happier.
Don't recommend this...
