Literally just out of the restaurant which was such a favourite in the past it was our choice for bringing our overseas visitors for their first night in Sydney... food was great (especially the fish pie) but just can’t get past the service. The word abysmal is being thrown around.
Honestly the worst service I’ve ever encountered. Twenty minutes to take our order and the waitress had the most unimpressive attitude. Then when it comes to dessert time we are told we cant order our preference due to timing so we decide against dessert.... then it takes 20 minutes for them to take our credit card which only happened after we were waving our hands profusely in the air (which went unnoticed, unsurprisingly at this stage). I’m pretty sure we could have had time for dessert in this space of time! We actually needed to get up and tap a waiter on the shoulder to ask for our payment to be taken. When we explained what had happened to him (since the waitress still hasn’t noticed our waving hands), there was no apology. Terrible customer service. Won’t be back and a very embarrassing first experience of Sydney, service wise, for our visitors.
Five stars for the chef (especially the fish pie - I only wish our guests had gotten to experience the chocolate fondant but unfortunately weren’t allowed the liberty). Zero stars to the waitress and waiter. It’s such a shame when this occurs. I normally don’t write these types of reviews but management just quite simply need to...
Read moreJust wanted to share my thoughts on last night's dinner. The wait staff where sweet but the disappointment was with the food. We have eaten at Brown Sugar since they were located in Ramsgate Ave and tonight I wanted to take my kids and partner out for a post covid dinner.
To start , the entrees, each one was a disappointment. The sauce for the mussels was watery and lacked any tabasco or chilli or taste. The artichokes were basic.and dry The only recommendation would be the scallop.
Mains where a disaster, the golden snapper was over cooked and dry. Was not able to eat it and left it. The waiter didn't ask me why I didn't eat it? The pie crust was great and the potatoes were good but the seafood in the pie consisted of 2 tiny pieces of fish with lots of sauce. The constancy inside the pie was a third, at $65 was not worth it! The other 2 dishes we tried were smothered with hazelnuts and more hazelnuts then pinenuts! Too bad if you had a nut allergy.
The dessert of the chocolate fondue was the only good thing of the evening. I was told that new owners had taken over the place, so I need to say for what we paid which was close to $400 for 4 people we could have had a better meal at the pub. All 4 of us walked away extremely disappointed and also concerned that everyone was seated on top of each other....no social distancing.
I hope you take what i say and maybe revert to the old way food was cooked. Maybe we should just stick to the...
Read moreOn a very chilly winter's Friday evening we made a late run at dinner and ended up at Brown Sugar. As a first timer here, I was pleasantly surprised at both the vibe within, and the general ambiance of this place. High points go to the staff here, they were efficient, knowledgeable - charming wouldn't be too strong a word here. They really were great. We leaned into several shared entrees and opted for a shared main. The scallops were indeed very good, but the standout seafood entree was the tuna ceviche, which was absolutely spot on with a sauce that was just spicy enough to enjoy without needing to eyeball your glass of water afterwards. The roasted cauliflower was superb. Moroccan lamb to follow, which was a very healthy portion size that made desert almost out of the question. The wine list is relatively compact but still has a decent range and a malbec from a small South Australian vineyard, which I admit I had to Google and then jot down after a a few sips, was an excellent companion to the meal. Several coffees to finish off. Good value for money too, which was a pleasant surprise at the end. What a great way to spend a winter's evening. You could do a lot worse that to put this place on your...
