Matraville Hotel — Restaurant in Sydney

I had recently returned from overseas after 2 months and decided to have a few beers and a meal with some very good friends at the Matto. We enjoy the new bar area and enjoy watching the NRL, we all live local. It has always been a very pleasant environment up until tonight. We are in our late 50's, very mature, very active and respectful of our local community. In early August 2023, we decided to have a few beers while watching the footy on a Friday night. We decided it was almost time to wrap things up and at around 8:30pm ordered a few steaks, after which we would be heading home. Our meals arrived and they were quite nice, not two bites into our meal a heavy handed security officer came to our table and directed us to vacate the area immediately. We were quite taken back by his tone and the abrupt nature of his approach. One of my colleagues pointed out that we were in the middle of our meal and would like to finish it before we left the premises. He said not his problem as he was under instructions from management to clear the area now. His boss then came over and instead of diffusing the situation he escalated it and told us if we weren't happy we could leave the premises right now. He was a bit of a firebrand and realised quickly how foolish he sounded and then left. Over the next 5-10 minutes security continued to bombard us reminding us it was time to leave. I don't often write reviews but I have never experienced such poor customer service and bullish behaviour. I won't be back until I am convinced that the management and security is more professional and properly trained on dealing with customers. Got the scotch steak and fish and chips, the only reason this is getting two stars is because the steak was cooked to perfection. The vinegarette needs throwing out and a new batch needs to be made, strong bitter salty taste to it. Chips were over seasoned, the steak not seasoned at all and the mushroom sauce was basic and more of a gravy you could taste the wine in it but not one mushroom in the sauce, looked like gravy also. The fish and chips, the fish was not fresh at all, tasted as if it's slightly pre cooked after it's battered and then fully cooked to order however it was soggy. absolutely disgusting service, the workers are liars and the main manager with the tatts is a fool and doesn't know his job. What a clown and i certainly wont be back, extremely dishonest workers, for all that money you spent on the renovation its a shame you didn't spend some on sending your staff to training school and how to get integrity. absolute joke of a management structure which clearly lets this place down as no one goes there, all that money spent and you have missed the fundamentals of a good business: good people, it wont be long before the place is shut down and then i might revisit with a new management team that actually know what they are doing and are honest.
