After discovering D’Penyetz & D’Cendol in Burwood, I visited Teras Java in Mascot hoping for a similarly exciting Indonesian meal. It had high Google ratings, but it turns out they attract them by giving away free Teh Kotak for on-the-spot Google reviews. You’ll find the indoor-outdoor space at the base of a residential tower in a windy canyon of similar-looking towers. Parking is limited, but there’s a Woolworths across the road with a carpark. With the wind making the exterior tables challenging, we retreated inside to the narrow interior that’s painted trompe l’oeil to look like you’re outdoors in rural Indonesia. Glued on shutters magnify the effect. Most tables are set down the restaurant-length brown banquette on the same painted wall.
A well-photographed picture menu makes choosing easy. We try the benchmark beef rendang on the nasi pedang ($19.90) but find it’s acidic rather than creamy and hasn’t been cooked to the point the beef splits under pressure from a fork. It’s bested by a creamy yellow vegetable curry with its gravy poured over the rice. Fried chook is dried out from being cooked past crisp, but the sambal-topped egg balado were great punctuated with tannic cassava leaves. Tahu isi ($10/3) is Indonesia’s answer to the Chiko Roll: a big deep fried ball of carrot-stuffed tofu that needs sambal to be anything other than bland. Siomay Bandung ($15) drapes a collection of steamed chicken and fish dumplings, fried tofu and egg with a too-sweet peanut sauce. The es cendol ($9) is good and, alongside the es kelapa muda ($7) (young coconut milk) will put out the fire if you get too liberal with the tasty sambal raden (the second hottest sambal on...
