On our first visit, we were quickly greeted by the waiter and given a seat. He was very attentive and made sure everything was good. He asked for drinks first, and I had a hot chocolate while my partner had a cappuccino. We were new to this place, so we spent a long time deciding on what to eat since everything sounded so appetising. I ended up having hot cakes, and my partner had smashed avocado toast with a poached egg. The drinks were given first, and it was great. The hot chocolate I got somehow tasted better than the usual, and they had even given me a marshmallow. When the food arrived, I was ecstatic as it had looked incredibly unique. The hotcakes weren’t as I had expected, but it was pleasant surprise because the blend of flavours, even though it’s all sugar, speaks for itself. The berry compote was generously spread in between the thick hotcakes, and it was a fun challenge to get a proper slice straight through all of them. The citrus added a tangy taste to the berry taste. The ice cream on top drizzled with maple syrup helped to blend the warm sweetness into a smooth, toned down but tasteful bite. It was the most perfect hotcakes I’ve ever had. The avo toast my partner had was just as incredible, as she reminds me that she still dreams about it now and then. It came with edible flowers, and a flavourful cherry tomato salsa, which should be included in every bite. The cherry tomatoes were also marinated in a dressing which tasted wonderful. The onions were diced nice and small so it was not too overpowering, and helped mix with the avocado and cherry tomatoes. The avocado itself was very creamy, with a beautifully cooked poached egg to top it all off.

The second visit, we had ordered the exact same meals because of how incredible our first time was. We were unfortunately let down, as both of our meals were lacking, and had not tasted as good as it did previously. As soon as the hotcakes had arrived, I noticed something was different about it. It didn’t look as good as it did the first time, but I also realised that they had left out the citrus this time, and the whole plate had looked a lot more bland because of it. The hotcakes were alright, but had tasted chewier and undercooked. It still tasted good, though it could have been better. The avocado toast was a massive let down, as it failed to meet the expectations we were given on our first visit. The onions were chunkier and made it difficult to enjoy the flavours. The cherry tomato salsa wasn’t even a salsa, it was plain cherry tomatoes with no marinade of any kind, and had tasted bland. The avocado was satisfactory, though the toast had felt colder than it should have been, as did the poached egg. There were also no edible flowers, which made it look less unique as it did before. We left feeling unsatisfied, though we remained hopeful for our next visit.

My next visit was with a few friends, and I had hotcakes again, while my friends had burgers. My meal had arrived last and I could tell something was off. This time, it was presented quite poorly, and had random pieces of fruit around the plate. They had brought back the citrus, and even included strawberries and pear slices. The hotcakes were off balanced, and fell easily. I could tell that they had put a lot less berry compote because every bite I took was dry. When i was nearly finished, I noticed a hair strand coming out of it. The waiter came out to check on us and I informed him, and he immediately apologised and went to the kitchen to speak to the chefs. He told me that I need not pay for my meal today because of it, and I was grateful for it. I was appreciative of their service.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t say that this is a bad cafe because of the mishaps I’ve experienced, it would just be an inconsistent one. The food here can definitely be delicious, and the service is always great. I will still come here regularly, but it’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to have food as good as the first time...

Grumpy barista & inconsistent information given!!

Frequenting this cafe every Saturday because my son comes to the playground every after dancing class nearby. Been good so far although they always run out of my fav beetroot latte.

Today was a bit of a different case. Made a takeaway order for a reg cap and beetroot latte, made payment. Told beetroot latte isn't available and given choices of substitutes. Chose a large hot chocolate instead, which the remaining $1 is refunded in cash. All good and waited.

Order came and I took it, after a minute realised that the hot choc given was a regular. Went back to clarify and was given a grumpy answer by barista "no, that was correct, you ordered a regular". Tried flagging the lady who took my order instead, she apologised and told me they would make me another small cup of hot choc, then apologised again. I nodded and said OK.

Barista lady came and asked for my tray (containing the hot choc & cap) - pretty immediately after the counter lady walked away. I kindly obliged thinking she would change it to a bigger tray to fit 3 cups, instead of the current 2. How am I surprised that she just replaced the regular cup with large cup. It isn't even hot, seems like she's only adding cold milk + previous cup to the new large cup. Only the "there you go" with grumpy face and turn her face around straightaway. Where's the extra cup promised by the other lady? She knew I'm sharing it with my toddler son, hence the non-caffeine option.

In the end of the day, I still get my original order. But the whole process is quite stressful as 2 ladies said different things. And I am definitely not happy with the attitude of that barista. The miscommunication between 2 of your staffs should not be a customer's problem. And please give the customer what you say you'll...

Stumbled upon this cute little cafe whilst apartment hunting in the area. First time we went was worthy of 4.5 star rating, 2 x juices on a hot day + something sweet. Sitting out in the sun was lovely.

Second visit a weekend later, was sadly disappointing. For someone who’s been in hospitality for 17 years. The overall experience wasn’t the best. The prices for a breakfast meal are out of whack. Paid for toast and a bunch of sides, and the portion sides were absolutely weak. If you advertise $3.50 for tomatoes you’d think you’d get more than one piece, I got a stingy 1/4 of a tomato. You can buy a kilogram for that price, and you gave me on my plate 1/4 of one. Sorry but that is the ultimate cheapskate to bring out on a plate for someone. I’m all about understanding prices going up, but that isn’t okay. Potato Rosti was great credit for whoever made that, I could have ate a few of those. Slow cooked beef, was a hit and miss. I was expecting a little more than that, flavour was okay. Juices and coffee were great, the cafe layout and atmosphere was also great, staff all friendly. The lady on the floor was sweet, was her first day. But was unsure why it was a busy morning and she was the only one on the floor running around, kitchen had like 4 + staff, as did the coffee machine and register, someone should have been giving her a hand. My wife’s açai bowl was not bad, the flavour of the açai itself was a bit random, almost tasted like bubblegum, not the usual açai flavour we were use to. Hopefully they work on their portion sizes...

Whilst close by the Mascot area late on a Saturday afternoon, and hearing that there are new owners of the Bourke and Hare Cafe, we thought we'd see the changes. The men at B&H don't disappoint. Starting with a cappuccino and piccolo latte and later after a bite to eat a, single origin Ethiopian, double ristretto from Deluca roasters which satisfied those rich coffee flavours you expect from a great barista and bean. They offer an all day breakfast and a lunch menu that will get your mouth watering. We tried the prawn linguini and steak with a beetroot and quinoa salad. Both the prawn and beef, so tender and juicy, were lovingly cooked by their great chef and their freshly in-house made pasta was delicious with a hint of chilli to please! After hearing they also offer in-house pastries in conjunction with some of Textbook Pastries (also of Mascot) we couldn't resist taking a small collection home to sample later, and we are so glad we did. Well worth the trip to Mascot and now jealous of those locals having a great destination now on their doorstep.
