We had heard about this restaurant recently and decided to give it a try on the way home after a long day.

We arrived at 6pm, and there were not many other customers there.

I realised it was earlier than a usual dinner time so decided to judge for ourselves if all the reviews we had read were true.

Well let me add another 5 star review.

The service was good, we were given time to peruse the menu, not rushed.

We decided to go for some of our usual dishes when we eat at a Japanese restaurant.

My wife praised the Agadashi Tofu (it was excellent).

My Karaage Chicken was crispy on the outside and succulently juicy on the inside.

Even the steamed rice was better than average.

By the time we had finished eating, a lot more customers had arrived.

We will be back to try other dishes we saw on the menu.

I highly recommend this restaurant.

Edit August 2025: My wife and I went again to Wai Wai to celebrate her birthday.

The service and the food is still excellent.

This time I tried the Chicken Namban and we both liked the Kimchi we ordered as one...

Whether you're a sashimi lover or craving for some ramen, the chefs at Wai Wai have developed a great menu with something for everyone.

Dining at Wai Wai transported me back to the seafood I had at the Tsukiji outer markets in Tokyo - fresh sashimi and sushi that showcased and enhanced the flavours of the fish. I recommend getting the 13-piece "Assorted Sashimi" or "Assorted Aburi Sushi" to experience the range.

If you're looking for something more wholesome, you can't go wrong with their "Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen" with extra chashu or karaage on the side. We visited on a cold night and the rich broth was perfect for the chilly evening.

Of course we couldn't leave without having some dessert. Their "yuzu cheesecake" was a delicate balance of sweet and citrus - the perfect way to end the night.

Jacky and the team were very hospitable and took the time out to take care of our table despite how busy it was on their opening night.

Wai Wai is a local gem that easily makes it onto my go-to spots for authentic Japanese food. Can't wait...

Shoutout to the Ramen Gang group on Facebook. Can confirm that their ramen is tops, which is rare for the area. We had the lunch special which, we think, comes with less toppings than the "full" portion, but you won't miss them with how good the soup is. Gyokai tonkotsu ramen: the seafood stock has the added scent of prawn, giving it a special taste I don't get in any of the ramen northside (eg Sekka, Manpuku). Winner all around. Shoyu chicken ramen: the chicken soup is pretty delicious and rich! Chicken based soups can be missed more than hits, so it's great to have found a hit. The noodles are a little firmer and you can appreciate the taste more with this soup. At $14.50 a bowl you really can't go wrong, when most bowls are $17-$30 these days. Inflation sucks. They were not busy at all when we arrived, so getting a table shouldn't be an issue. Check this out for sure if you live in the area and want a good ramen.

If you’re looking for nice cosy places with great service and quality food, add this restaurant to your list! The interior looks very clean and neat, complimented well with the well-presented dishes. Ideal for all types of customers looking to eat classic favourites from the Japanese cuisine. The Shio ramen may take you by surprise on the first spoonful but don’t worry, it gets better and better with every bite. Definitely a considerate portion and satisfying taste. The side dishes (takyoyaki and gyoza) are a must as well! Dessert ended the night on a high note, the yuzu cheesecake was a unanimous favourite in our group, would definitely recommend. Otherwise the matcha ice cream is a great alternative. Will be looking forward to visit again soon!
