3.5 stars for the Thredbo Pub; or, if you're just there for a few beers, bump that up to 4 stars plus. It's been consistently at that level during the 25 or so years I've been visiting. (Usually several times during the walking season, never during ski season.)
Let's get the food out of the way first. It ranges from OK to barely OK (occasionally very OK, but you pays your money and you takes your chances). All at mountain resort prices. Still, it's the least expensive way in Thredbo to have a meal out and/or stop your kids mewling for chippies.
The venue's pleasingly rustic with many outdoor tables and a view to kill for. It couldn't be more conveniently located. And the prices for drinks are almost surely the best in the village. After a walk or before dinner, it's a great place to stop and soak up the atmosphere.
A very welcome pool table and darts mean you can have fun without hitting the bar.
Staffing is inevitably susceptible to resort / seasonal help. I find them usually friendly and helpful, but when it starts getting ugly-busy then . . . well, we all understand.
In sum, The Local Pub is a Thredbo institution that deserves your business - but if you're after fine dining, maybe just have a few cool ones here first and then go on to Berntis.
Pro tip: the local ravens patrolling the deck will talk to you, if you speak to them politely.
Missy The Cat Star Ratings:
5 - a place of rare genius that merits repeated return visits
4 - a strong effort with no major shortcomings
3 - a solid, worthy effort with perhaps one important thing to fix
2 - several important things wrong, but at least one important thing right
1 - can't be given a zero, doesn't deserve a dollar (as of...
Read moreDay 1: I was surprised and happy to see that they have plant based options. Went to the counter to order food, since the QR code didn't allowed any changes. Order a plant based parmy without cheese because I'm vegan. After a long time waiting, my food came with ham on top of it. Who puts ham on a plant based? Day 2: order nachos, again, without cheese and sour cream. Always making sure if was possible and the lady said yes. Afterwards, i figure it out that the avocado was mixed with cream and it tasted disgusting. What if i was allergic? The description of the plate didn't say anything about cream, and this is very seriois. Also, one of my friends took the wrong plate by mistake and the lady was extremely rude with him, specifically because his English...
Read moreI really enjoyed the evening here with my family. First a round of pool, followed by a meal. We had four different meals and all of them were really good. Two were typical pub meals (a kids cheese burger and a plate of nachos), the others were what you would usually order in an upmarket restaurant (marinated lamb back strap, smokes salmon pasta). All get definite thumbs up, especially for a pub.
Servings are very big (we are actually a family of five and the four meals were more than enough). Staff were friendly and helpful. I need to add that we were there in summer (well, April, but not during ski season) so the place was not exceptionally busy.
When reviewing I always ask myself whether I would come back. In this case is is...
