I remember going to the Beechworth Bakery in Beechworth as I lived in the town 20 odd years ago. This is the first time in another location in Ballarat. Time was 11.45am Unfortunately not a great experience and like some other franchised businesses, it hasn’t replicated its original fabulous quality. I bought a chicken and avo sandwich, a classic beef pie, a little tart with custard and mixed berries on top and a coffee. All takeaway. And consumed within 5 minutes of purchase. The chicken filling used was the defrosted commercial frozen product that caterers use, with that odd spongey texture that is not fresh. I have seen it unfortunately in many businesses where the use of ‘real’ poached or roasted chicken is deemed too time consuming and/or costly. I get it. But Beechworth Bakery? The avo barely there and rather than slices or a chunky texture, there was a thin film of avo paste. The pie’s flavour was all there and a decent size but the crust was stiff and overheated like it was yesterday’s stock reheated, or the temp set too high or that dish of water in the bottom of the pie warmer was missing. Disappointing. Finally the tart. The fruit on top was crunchelly frozen and the whole tartlet was just below freezing point. The base had defrosted but only just. Again it could be a temperature related issue, but I suspect, straight from the freezer to the fridge. Again, surprised and by this stage for me annoying. The coffee was excellent. While I was waiting for the coffee, I was watching the display screens and noted the staff photos from the Echuca outlet. They were engaging and fun but staff were wearing Xmas gear. Great for spruiking that time of the year but surely in August some more recent photos showcasing your fabulous staff would be more relevant? I know I sound harsh. I’m not meaning to be but the product is SO different from its original, humble and fabulous beginnings, I was shocked. Too many shortcuts that are...
Read moreBeechworth Bakery in Ballarat is a haven for pastry lovers, and my recent visit did not disappoint. Known for being one of Australia’s oldest bakery, it has a warm atmosphere and exceptional baked goods, it’s the perfect spot for a sweet indulgence or a relaxing coffee break.
The Bee Sting was an absolute standout—soft and fluffy brioche topped with a caramelized almond glaze and filled with creamy custard. It struck the perfect balance between sweetness and texture. The Cream Donut was another highlight, with its pillowy dough generously filled with fresh cream that felt like a nostalgic treat.
The Cream Raspberry Lamington was a creative twist on a classic, with the tangy raspberry and rich cream pairing beautifully with the moist lamington sponge. The Nutella Donut, with its gooey Nutella filling and lightly sugared exterior, was indulgent without being overly sweet—a real crowd-pleaser for chocolate lovers.
The staff were friendly and efficient, ensuring quick service even during busy times. If you’re in Ballarat, a visit to Beechworth Bakery is a must. Whether you’re after a sweet treat or simply a comforting place to relax, this bakery...
Read moreLocated in a old building housing a former bank has a nice old rustic feel. Inside is very spacious with cosy booths and family size dinning available. There is still the original vault door from the former bank whichs adds a nice historic feel. The menu is extensive with a large selection of gourmet pies and also baked goods. Coffee is available as well as a selection of cold made to order drinks and the usual canned and bottled beverages. The beesting and the ned kelly pie were a stand out for me. It is a steak pie with bacon, cheese and egg. Their vanilla slice portions are the equivalent of 2 in melbourne. Their lamingtons were amazing and also their little ned kelly ginger bread men were a hit with the kids. Their is a small kids pen to keep the little ones occupied whilst you sit back and relax with a great coffee and a delicious baked good. Highly recommended staff were very friendly and helpful. Brought some cold pies home for dinner that night was delicious. One negative i have to say is that they dont do the family size pies. But overall and very...
