Charming Coffee Spot Near the Bay – Icaro Café Review During my recent stay at an Airbnb on 1B Cartwright Street in Apollo Bay, VIC, I stumbled upon a lovely little café just a short stroll away—Icaro Café. Tucked away in this picturesque coastal town, Icaro is a hidden gem that blends quality coffee, fresh eats, and a calm, welcoming vibe that perfectly complements a beachside getaway. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the warm, earthy aesthetic. The interiors feature wooden textures, lush plants, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light—creating an airy, relaxing atmosphere. The staff greeted me with genuine smiles and friendly energy, making me feel right at home. Icaro Café’s menu leans toward wholesome, locally sourced ingredients with a creative twist. I ordered the smashed avo on sourdough, which came generously topped with feta, cherry tomatoes, microgreens, and a subtle hint of lemon—fresh and flavorful. I also tried their banana bread, served warm with whipped butter, which was a delightful comfort treat. But the real highlight was the coffee. I’m quite picky with my espresso, and Icaro delivered beautifully. Smooth, rich, and roasted to perfection, their flat white was easily one of the best I had in the region. They also offer plant-based milks and various non-coffee drinks, making it inclusive for all preferences. What I appreciated most was the location—just minutes from the Airbnb on Cartwright Street. After morning walks along the beach, Icaro became my go-to spot for breakfast or a midday pick-me-up. It’s clear the team here takes pride in what they do, and it shows in both the quality of food and the overall experience. Whether you’re in Apollo Bay for a weekend escape or a longer stay, Icaro Café is definitely worth a visit. Cozy, fresh, and full of heart—it’s the kind of place that feels like a local favorite and a traveler’s treasure all in one.

I appreciate the effort they put into the menu ie no seed oils or refined sugar & the cakes display is fun! I had the keto breakfast which as you can see was just a small amount of scrambled eggs & some avocados…(halloumi was a $6 add on.) The presentation of the food was beautiful! My husband had the avo toast and it was SUBLIME! So if you’re going for breakfast-GET THAT! The scrambled eggs on all 4 dishes were way over done but we did smell toast burning before our food was brought out so maybe the chef was distracted 🤪 I like my eggs soft & just cooked through, these were dry & actually chewy. The coffees were ok, they could have been hotter & stronger & guys- please make the same effort in making a takeaway coffee with as much love and art as a dine in because we all notice & can taste the love (or lack of) there’s a sign saying 50c off for byo take away cups but we weren’t given the discount…not a big deal but if you advertise it, get the staff to remember 😅 Overall an enjoyable (if not pricey) breakfast. Wouldn’t go for the coffee…still on the hunt for an amazing one in Apollo Bay!

We had high hopes because it serves St Ali’s coffee but we think it was just average. It was busy when we stopped by, we were in a bit of a rush and ordered the egg & spinach toastie and mac toastie displayed at the fridge to go, but it took 20 mins for the toasties to be readied. We dont understand why they couldn’t just reheat the ones at the fridge, they are busy but they should also prioritise take away orders. Staffs were not very patient either, we thought the toasties better be good, but we were disappointed. I also asked for sugar, but they asked me to get them on the table where other customers were sitting, as there were no spoons at the table either so i just carefully poured the bottle of sugar into my coffee, and also didnt have anything to stir it with.

Four months ago I would have been rating this place 5 stars. Sadly, since the change of management this place has really gone down hill. My favourite dish here was the smashed avo on sourdough with beetroot hummus and feta. Over the last year I would come in regularly and order it. It used to come with beetroot hummus and a generous serving of avocado and feta. Ever since Camille has left it has come with very little feta no hemp seeds and over the last couple of weeks, the beetroot hummus has changed to just hummus yet this is not reflected on the menu. Last week when I bought a serve it was smothered in hummus and once again with barely any avocado or feta. When I asked if it was meant to be beetroot hummus I was told that it had changed to just hummus. I apologised that I must have misread the menu, to be told “we haven’t changed it on the menu yet.” It would have been nice to have been told that when I placed my order. Today I hesitantly gave this place one last chance. Menu still stated beetroot hummus, but I asked first and was told it was just hummus. Fortunately the toast ( but very untoasted today) was not smothered in hummus this time, but once again very short changed in the feta. Only five pieces across two pieces of toast. I have uploaded two photos to the photo section under my name - one from today with its hummus and minimal avocado and feta and one from March this year with delicious beetroot hummus, generous serving of avocado and feta and topped with hemp seeds. The difference between the two servings is striking. Both photos show the serving in a take away box. Enough chances for the new management to get it right. I will not...
