Stiftsschmiede — Restaurant in Ossiach

This is a restaurant with a small number of rooms. In the upmarket but quiet town of Ossiach it is situated on the lake and has been run by the same family for years. Our room was on the 1st floor with a wrap around balcony where you could sit and admire the spectacular view. Everything was comfortable with a modern shower room. There was no air-conditioning so it was a bit hot with temperatures over 35 centigrade. The owner is well in evidence and will give you useful advice about the area and also the menu in the restaurant. Parking is available next to the hotel. Breakfasts feature a massive selection of Austrian meats and delicacies as well as the usual offerings. The restaurant of the hotel is a major attraction and is largely based on fish - mainly cold water fish. I was a bit dubious at first but I had never tasted fish so tender and unusual. I was shown the open grill that was used. We had the set menu at 58€ each which is expensive but worth dining on one night if you are staying there. What a huge disappointment!! While the restaurant is ever so idyllic with it's old building and charming location directly at Ossiacher lake the arrogant and less than mediocre service really tempers the mood. We had a reservation for a table in the alfresco area. Upon arrival this reservation was nowhere to be found. There's was no apology for the inconvenience but instead were fobbed off with a table close to a noisy wedding reception. Loud music and smoking guests close to us made this evening a less memorable one. The service was the worst I had in a while. One the waiters smelled terribly sweaty which was extremely off-putting during our dinner, another waiter had no idea about the dish of the day and gave a flippant reply and another one was extremely impolite and preposterous completely forgetting the old hospitality rule to pamper the guest and exceed his/her expectations. Instead the bread served was old and hard and upon complaining he gave an inappropriate, impertinent answer. Food was good but with all the negative vibes surrounding us, we could not enjoy it...

La location del ristorante Stiftsschmiede è veramente rimarchevole: a bordo lago, con barche che si muovono silenziose (elettriche) e con un bel panorama dominato sulla sinistra dalla Gerlitzen, meta invarnale famosa per le sue piste di sci.||Stiftsschmiede offre un menu di carne e pesce, privilegiando i prodotti locali, i pesci di lago e di fiume, la carne della fauna locale, gli ortaggi e le erbe tipiche del luogo. Il tutto accompagnato dei vini della Carinzia.Siamo venuti con un gruppi di una sessantina di persone, amici carinziani ed austriaci. Il personale ci ha accolto rivolgendoci a noi in italiano, ed offrendoci un brindisi per accompagnare un buon 'risotto' di grano saraceno con verdure e funghi, servito nella terrazza sul lago, buono e particolare. Abbiamo continuato nella sala interna con antipasti, uno dei quali a base di trota marinata di lago, seguiti da una zuppa di gamberi di fiume (veramente ottima) come primo, e dai secondi: un filetto di trota di lago ed un'ottima sella di cervo. In un angolo della sala a volte (dall'aspetto antico), viene fatta la cottura con la griglia e vengono preparati i piatti da servire. Abbiamo bevuto delle bollicine rosè Sax, del Weissburgunder (pinot bianco) Sax 2016 Langenlois (molto buono ed apprezzato) e un rosso St. Laurent Weingut Hühnel Gumpoldskirchen 2012, buono. Dopo i dessert abbiamo assaggiato la grappa di Pfau. La serata è stata allietata dal suono di un arpa magnificamente suonata da una giovane musicista, e da 4 cantanti che hanno intonato tipiche canzoni carinziane. Personale gentilissimo, il titolare sempre presente e premuroso, il prezzo assolutamente non esagerato. Una pranzo iniziato molto tardi (alle 14.30) che si è piacevolmente protratto fino alle 18.30. Il luogo è veramente incantevole e offre anche la possibilità di soggiornare sopra all'htel in bellissime suite fronte lago e nel vecchio grande convento retrostante, trasformato in moderno hotel.
