Some positives and negatives with this place. Overall, if you're looking for a quasi-special place to enjoy an afternoon once in a while, consider Le Flore. Having said that, there may be better places to take your hunger and your wallet.
The atmosphere is nice -- a smallish restaurant tucked into the edge of the woods with ample parking for bicycles. Cars can be parked nearby for those who don't ride.
The Good: Frites (I recommend the sweet potato) & coleslaw. The coleslaw could use a touch more vinegar for my liking but it's probably some of the best I've had in Belgium. Atmosphere: nice decor.
Needs Improvement: The Burger. For about 14 Euro you'll pay for an ever-so-trendy smash burger. This is essentially the en-vogue way to upcharge customers for a smaller piece of meat that has been hammered into something thinner than a stroopwaffel. The sandwich is filling, but only thanks to the potato roll. I would go for the chicken sandwich if I were to return.
Reservations: Table for 2 scheduled for 12:30. The waiter who greeted me pointed to the only remaining 2-top. As I set my coat on the chair a different waiter tried to seat someone else at my table.
Staff: generally friendly. They're busy and probably trying their best, but make no mistake: they want you to leave as soon as possible! This is the same kind of high turnover that American restaurants want to see, but something unlike what I normally experience in the area. The staff are quick to clear your table of everything until you're left with your half a glass of beer or water, indifferent to whether you may want to order another and enjoy the moment with your tablemate. No sooner had I stood to leave, than a waiter brought a couple to my table who stood there awkwardly as I put my coat on.
Cleanliness: Generally clean, but people bring their dogs there. Not normally an issue for me, but we winced as people walked over the small turd left on the floor. I know the local custom of native dog owners here is to let your dog crap anywhere and not have the decency to clean up as if the Crap Fairy will come and take it away, but this seems below the mark for indoor dining. With kids playing on the floor and the bustling staff walking to and fro, it was only a matter of time before someone came into contact with the landmine -- and it was the unlucky wheel of someone's stroller who relocated the turd .5 meters closer to the bar.
In sum: go to La Flor. I'm sure there's plenty of great things on the menu which haven't been hammered into oblivion and up-charged. The staff will welcome you but remember that you'll quickly wear out your welcome. The place has a TON of...
Read moreA beautiful location that leaves much to be desired in terms of customer service, hospitality, and clear communication.
We planned our post-wedding drinks party at Le Flore and had been in touch with a nice member of their staff. Closer to the date (and between our wedding organization) we were contacted by the Manager, Barnabe. He immediately gave off a negative and condescending vibe but it was too late or us to organize our party elsewhere.
We showed up to the date and he introduced himself then let us know that we would have to ensure that everyone spent at least 20 euros to cover "the price of reserving the area". It had been storming all day and was still raining and during the course of the night 6 other people showed up that were not from our party.
In the end we brought them about 65 people who consumed well. On the good side, the cocktails are great and the Brazilian waiter is also lovely. However, the rest started going downhill pretty fast. The kitchen closed abruptly, without letting many people know (including the bride and the groom) so we stayed hungry most of the night. The bar then closed before 11pm and not everyone was told either.
The final cherry on the cake was us being told that they were going to close at 11pm as we had not confirmed we wanted to stay until 1am. This was never communicated by email - so a party of about 60 people was forced to disperse and no effort was made to accommodate us.
All in all, it is a real shame that the management of this place is so unpleasant and inflexible. It shows a real lack of customer friendliness and dampens the potential this location has as it is stunning and set apart from other bars. However, the service and management need a real upgrade and I have to say we did not have a nice experience overall. 65 of us wouldn't recommend it and won't be...
Read moreA year ago I went with my girlfriend for a cosy dinner and we liked it a lot, albeit the service was extremely slow and it took very long to get the food to our table.
Today, we went for a brunch. It was practically full. We arrived at 13:05 and they told us we could sit on a table but at 14:00 we should go (because of a reservation). We did not want to stay for very long so we agreed. Well, we received the food at 14:55. Almost two hours later. For a toast. One of the toast was literally 4 pieces of pear with honey and a few nuts. Completely unaccepatble. Most of the service were friendly and helpful, but the person "in charge" that day was unrespectful and arrogant when listening to our complains. Blame on: the owner, for not ensuring enough staff to handle the demand; the staff, to allow more people to be served when it was clear they could not give a proper service.
Never...
