Benelux Restaurant — Restaurant in De Panne

Terrible service. We came to this restaurant because some local person recommended it. When we arrived there were no tables inside available so after a quick chat with the host/manager/owner we decided to sit outside... I explained to the owner that I have a terrible cigarette allergy and that sitting outside was really against my wish but I was really hungry and we had good references, he even helped us to check when the other tables were going to be occupied. So far so good but 10 min later the table that we checked was occupied by 2 heavy smokers who were friends with the owner. It was so disappointing to see that he just wanted to cash in and did not even care about my allergy. He obviously knew the people sitting there, it would have been nicer for him to say that he had a table but that after hearing about my allergy, he recommended to go somewhere else because I was going to be surrounded by a chimney. Obviously I am not coming...

A nice looking bistroish restaurant. It took about 45 minutes to take our order and get drinks on the table - maybe because we didn't speak French. The oysters were probably best I've ever had, and this was in August. The starter soup was very big. Our kid wasn't served with plates, forks and such until we asked, and we had to go find the high chair by ourselves. After about 1 h and 40 minutes in the restaurant, we finally had main courses on the table. If I was running restaurant, I would try to be quicker for tables with a restless 1-year-old in the group. The cod with truffle sauce was heavenly smooth and satisfying. One of us was disappointed because there were surprise mushrooms in the dish - the menu didn't tell about that. Nous sommes entrés dans ce Restaurant par le plus grand des hasards (celui où je projetais d'aller étant fermé). Accueillis vraiment très aimablement par le Patron alors que son Etablissement était plein à craquer (une bonne quarantaine de couverts intérieurs, la terrasse extérieure étant démontée pour l'hiver), un midi de semaine, il nous a trouvé une table pour 2 dans la minute. Son épouse était très prévenante, sans en faire de trop et le serveur (un Apollon hyper bien foutu !) efficace et également très aimable. Tous néerlandophones mais s'adressant à nous dans un français parfait, sans se forcer... Souriants et "naturels"... Nous nous sommes régalés d'un Chateaubriand pour 2 (conseil de 2 voisins de l'une des tables voisines), ultra-tendre, avec une sauce maison parfumée à souhait, son accompagnement et des frites. Nous avons décliné la salade que l'on nous proposait gracieusement en plus. Avec un Ice-tea, une Leffe, 2 cafés, 80,50 € justifiés ! La viande était réellement succulente (il y a longtemps que nous n'en avions pas mangé une aussi tendre et goûteuse), cuite exactement selon nos critères de choix, l'ambiance simple et décontractée (les tables voisines occupées par des habitués Belges néerlandophones d'un côté et francophones de l'autre, pas bêcheurs pour un sou (comme les vrais Belges !) et avec qui nous avons pu échanger tant pour fixer notre choix (c'est la première fois que je vois mon Conjoint s'adresser à un Flamand pour lui demander ce qu'il a dans l'assiette et mange !) et plaisanter. La carte n'est pas hyper longue mais c'est presque rassurant... Une chose est sûre, on y...
