La grande Bleue — Restaurant in Houffalize

Glacial service but worth it. Unfortunately they can't ad up.

Normally a near 2 hour wait for my main course would have earned a restaurant 2 stars at best but I have to make an exception in this case.

I was part of a table of 7. We arrived at 7pm and ordered smartly. Luckily I was one of the three that ordered a starter, mine being part of the "Mediterranean Experience" set meal. We ordered a very nice bottle of Greek wine to go with it.

The starters arrived after about an hour and were delicious but 4 of my party had still not eaten yet. It was a full hour before the main courses arrived. Luckily they were spectacular! Good sized portions and very tasty. The frustration was soon forgotten.

Front of house were clearly working hard as the restaurant was full. They were very attentive and always happy to help. Unfortunately when the bill arrived it was 50 Euros too much due to three separate errors on it including things we had not ordered.

If you want fast food this is not the place for you, but if you have a whole evening and want delicious food then it's probably exactly what you are looking for. However do...

I usually don’t bother giving a negative review, but want to make an exception this time. The reason we went to this restaurant was exactly because of the high review ratings and the positive comments. However, we were highly disappointed.

July 30, 2024, dinner. No busy evening, a few other tables on the terrace were occupied. There’s a nice, varied selection of food on the menu. The location of the terrace is good, overviewing a not-too-busy traffic junction. ± Our food, a salade Niçoise, was average (lots of potatoes, egg not well-cooked). – The service was very bad or, rather, non-existent. There was a minimum amount of conversation from the waiter: a silent urge to be fast in placing our orders, no inquieries on whether we were enjoying or had enjoyed our meal. When placing our food on the table the waiter was looking elsewhere; we’re not sure if he even said ‘Bon appétit’. – Free tap water was unavailable, contrary to what we had experienced in other French and Belgian restaurants.

Very friendly and professional waiter and the food was even better than we expected. We had the lamb shank with couscous and entrecote (looked more like a rib eye but was prepared very well anyway).
