A wonderful atmosphere and excellent service (our waitress was on point!) The setting is perfect for a romantic dinner with low lighting and intimate booths available. Heavy cutlery, linen napkins, etc. but not so formal that you'd feel out of place with smart jeans and no jacket. Bolero are going for a high end bistro vibe.
So, to the food. We love French food and this is French influenced so we can forgive the odd missing accents on the menu (just get a marker pen to sort those out).
The starters were very good. We had the steak tartare and chilli shrimp. Both delicious. Again, the cremè brûlée was on point. Everything was beautifully presented, however the mains let the show down. The quality of the ingredients was evident but everything was underseasoned - and with no on-table seasoning it should be. The filet steak didn't appear to be seasoned and, although cooked to perfection, the charred exterior tasted acrid. The beef hotpot again, should have burst with flavour, the mash potato though creamy and buttery was bland, and the peppercorm sauce appeared to have no flavour at all (not even pepper). Pop down to Bermuda Bistro for a peppercorn sauce that will knock your socks off.
Overall, some of the food was a 5 and some a a plain average 3. For an expensive meal, it should have been top notch and if they can put more flavour into the dishes then Bolero will become a...
Read moreI was lucky enough to find out about this local gem from a longtime Bermuda resident. It is the place to go if you are looking for outstanding food, service, and atmosphere. In fact, my husband and I enjoyed Bolero so much that we ate there three times during our recent visit to the island. The owner, Jonny Roberts, is also the chef! Well-recognized on the island for his skill, the food did not disappoint. We enjoyed prosciutto with artichokes, local rockfish, shrimp, and watercress Caesar salad, just to mention a few items. Jonny and his sous chef, Chops, do ALL the cooking. Amazing! The dining room runs like a well-oiled machine. Marian and Nicholas have worked at Bolero for years and are incredibly friendly, professional, and knowledgeable about both the cuisine and the excellent wine list. If you are looking for a creative rum or champagne cocktail, Sean, the bartender, will make sure not to disappoint. Located on the 2nd floor of a lovely old building on Front Street, care has been put into the decor, with interesting artwork created by Jonny's wife and friends. Such love has been put into this restaurant that it is no wonder locals fill the dining room for both lunch and dinner. I'm just so glad that we discovered Bolero and we'll certainly return on...
Read moreThis restaurant was extremely disappointing. It came highly recommended from various people we encountered on our trip. Unfortunately, we were provided a less than satisfactory experience. Our group is from right outside New York City and have experienced many high end restaurants. This restaurant does not even qualify to be middle tier simply based on service and food quality. The portions were extremely small and disappointing for the price. I ordered the steak and was unhappy with the flavorless “sauce” they provided. Additionally, I requested to have truffle fries rather than regular fries. I do not mind paying a surcharge but it is customary to let the customer know, however I was not told and they were very rude when I asked for an explanation as to why I was being charged. The service itself was absolutely awful. Our waiter only refilled our water glasses once (and since all the food was overly salty - we all were left thirsty the majority of the meal). Anytime we made a request of our waiter acted as if it were a bother. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting and cannot understand why it is so...
