STAY AWAY! This is definitely a tourist trap with below average "Bulgarian food". We had high hopes for this restaurant after reading some positive reviews from it and seeing it appear in various travel blogs. Unfortunately we were left very very disappointed with the whole experience. When we were shown to our table, there were no napkins under the cutlery (none were given to us later either), the waiter was ok but not the nicest. He was quite abrupt at taking our menus and serving us the food. We got our drinks very quickly and then waited 45 minutes for our starter to come, which was only flatbread and dips so it should come out of the kitchen very quickly - they weren't even that busy in terms of customers. There was a pot of spices with the starter with no spoon in it, so we had to use our fingers which is very unhygienic. There was a loud group at a table across from us and the waiter basically yelled at them and told them to have more respect for the other customers, but they weren't doing any harm at all, just having a nice time. We finished our starter quickly as we were hungry from waiting for so long, and the waiter walked past our table several times without taking the dirty plates away, asking how it was, or offering us another drink. 2 hours later, YES 2 HOURS, we were served our main dishes. The only reason we waited so long, was to see how long it would take for our main course to come. When it arrived it was poorly presented, tasted very bland, and was partially undercooked. The flatbread that topped one of the dishes was basically raw dough underneath and not edible. One of the dishes was a completely different meat to what we ordered as well. We actually got up and left without eating hardly any of our food. The manager was apologetic but kept giving us excuses as to why the food was like it was, which really isn't acceptable. I begrudge giving this restaurant even a one star rating as it's the worst place I have ever eaten. Avoid at all costs and go somewhere decent.

Moma is elegant, chic, and artfully decorated. Its menu offered a modern take on Bulgarian dishes, and we started with the Traditional Bulgarian Appetizers, a plate of six homemade dips including lyutenitsa (a sweet tomato pepper relish), kyupoolu (a spicy eggplant relish), shredded carrots mixed with cheese/yogurt/dill, a garlicky eggplant dip, a bean/chili dip, and tarama fish caviar. Each of these components was distinct, and everything came together to make a nice sampling of many different flavors and textures! For our mains, we had the not-so-creatively named “Our Local Dish in Bread Bowl,” a stew of chicken, pork, onions, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and spices, served in a crusty bread bowl. The stew was hearty and delicious with plenty of flavor from the chunks of meat and the slow-cooked vegetables. Finally, we had the Roasted Duck Leg in Dough, prepared according to an authentic 1940 recipe from the Bulgarian King’s kitchen. This was a dish of shredded duck leg in a stew of eggplants, tomatoes, garlic, onion, and thyme, all covered with dough and baked. The meaty, tender duck leg paired nicely with the sweet, savory, acidic flavors of the tomato stew, and the dough on top was baked into a crusty bread perfect for mopping up the sauce. Overall, the dishes here were beautifully presented and delicious, though the artistic setting was the highlight!

During my visit to Sofia, I had the pleasure of dining at Moma Restaurant, a charming Bulgarian restaurant tucked away on a side street off Vitosha Boulevard. From the moment I walked in, the classic decor with large, artistic pictures set a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it feel like a true cultural experience rather than just a meal. The restaurant’s traditional Bulgarian ambiance is beautifully complemented by its friendly and welcoming staff, who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Their kindness and attentiveness make a real difference, adding to the cozy and intimate feel of the place. The menu offers a variety of authentic Bulgarian dishes, with fresh ingredients and rich flavors that showcase the country’s culinary heritage. From the starters to the main course, every dish was well-prepared and presented with care. The combination of classic recipes and a modern touch made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Whether you’re looking for a quiet dinner spot or an authentic taste of Bulgarian cuisine in a cozy setting, Moma Restaurant is a fantastic choice. It’s a place where tradition meets comfort, making it a must-visit when in Sofia.

I booked a big dinner with 20 people. I was in discussion with the restaurant by email and by phone to organize the menu. It was not perfect but smooth enough. The food was good enough but nothing special, the restaurant is I would say pricey, if you’d love to eat something special, you have to prepare to spend. The atmosphere on the other side was perfect. We had the whole floor for us. There are nice paintings around and the table was prepared with lots of care.

The end of the dinner comes and I have to pay for everyone. To my astonishment they announce me that we have to pay 10% tax for the service. So I discuss with them that this is first completely unusual for a restaurant in Bulgaria and second that nobody announced me about the tax during my discussions with them. That left me with going around and telling everyone that they have to give more with respect to what I announced them and explaining why. So I found that really not professional from the restaurant side.

Another thing is that the waiter was not speaking very good English while a few people were English speakers.

I will leave to you to decide if you would like to visit this restaurant, spend a little bit more money for maybe the atmosphere and probably quality of the food.

As far as I’m concerned I would not go there a...
