Carne bowl and burrito: disappointing textural nightmare. There are so many appealing aspects about this place, but the execution falls flat. Claims of authentic Mexican flavours, fresh ingredients, and house-made tortillas really pull you in. I got pulled in and was incredibly disappointed as Mexican is one of my wife and I's favourite cuisines.
This was an unfortunately sad attempt at that cuisine. What we got was a sloppy mess. Where is the freshness and flavour? Non of it tasted bad, just not good. My greasy burrito tortilla was poorly and loosely wrapped around a moderately okay tasting goop amalgamation mixed with rice just a little too al dente. Why is this place claiming authenticity using lettuce like a Taco Bell instead of cabbage? Even Streats, the place giving you a side of poutine with your tacos or burrito, uses cabbage. Lettuce just wilts in the hot globby combination of fillings, so you're just left with a greasy tube of rice and slop. My wife's carne bowl was largely the same way, just without a tortilla and better cooked rice. Maybe the radishes they have on hand would improve things, but even if you like radishes these were pretty unappealing. A handful of dried out overly thick radishes, cut haphazardly with an obviously dull knife doesn't really help the situation. They were just tossed into the container outside of the burrito anyway, so no help there. A mandolin and covering the prepped produce in the fridge would go a long way. The hot salsa tasted like they waved a pepper over the mild salsa and called it a day. Al pastor and carne asada in our meals was tasty but dry. Even the best ingredients handled poorly result in a lackluster meal and that is what we experienced. This place claiming authenticity when Abbotsford residents have been going down to El Nopal for ages is honestly sad. As it stands, this is currently the last place I would go for Mexican cuisine...
Read moreI have to say as a first time visitor I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. I have become a fan. Me and my co-worker had the 3-taco plate. Being able to choose from six or so different "fillings" gave us an opportunity to try a bit of everything. The tacos were prepared with care and the presentation was great. But what about the food right. Well, each taco (different meats) tasted just as good as it looked. No rince and repeat flavours as each taco tasted different. I had corn tortillas for a more authentic street taco taste (you can also choose flour tortillas).
The location is easy to find and the area inside is roomy and open. You don't feel cramped when in there and you can enjoy your meal at your own pace. The only down side is they had no surgar-free pop (I am diabetic) so only water for those that don't want sugar. But they will tell you the counter on the other side of them (they share the inside of the building with Noodlebox) has diet pop.
I really didn't know what to expect, but I am happy I went and will be going more often then not when eating out by my work it was that enjoyable and fairly priced. I even bought some corn chips and salsa after our lunch to bring to work to snack on. ;-) Now I wish I took some pictures to show...
Read moreI need to take the time to sit and enjoy a meal at Good Taco in Abbotsford. To be honest, I am basing the Food Review on my visual experience and the rave reviews I received. I host Lunch & Learns for Architects and General Contractors. In the past week, my meetings have been further out in the Fraser Valley and I turned to Good Taco for their Catering offerings. This is not "Fast Food", this is true, authentic tacos (and other menu items). You can just tell the ingredients are fresh and made from scratch. With so many options, they are the most ideal source for group lunches - the Taco Kits and Taco Bars work for gluten free, plant-based preferences, etc. The only downside is the commute from Good Taco to the hosting office, because the amazing aroma in my vehicle is terrorizing!
Props to Tracey who greets you with a smile and offered to help carry the packages of food to my car.
Looking forward to my second order from Good Taco Abbotsford tomorrow and hoping my guests share with...
