Customer service: The staff are knowledgeable, and if they don't know the answer to a question, they will find out! They are incredibly helpful and willing to put in special orders for product. (They've ordered in larger bags of oat groats and rye for me. They call when it's arrived, although there's been some confusion locating my special orders sometimes. A bag of rolled oats had been put aside for me instead of the oat groats for one of my special orders, but we found the right bag on the shelves in the store āŗļø.)
Bread: Their gluten free bread is amazing, hands above any competitor we've tried. We love that we can find whole grain breads that are made without oil. The kids absolutely adore the bagels with dried fruit in them.
Bakery: This has become our go to treat stop. I spend between $20-$40 on treats anytime we come in just on baked goods for two adults and the four children that eat solids. (Our newest addition will be enjoying the treats with us next year I'm sure š). The family favourites are the Weekender (cinnamon bun), Monkey Bread (cinnamon pull apart), Blackout Cookie (double chocolate), S'mores Cookie, Fruity Scone, Cheddar Chive Scone, Jalapeno Scone, Pizza Rolls (without Jalapenos for the kids, with for me), any Cupcake, and the Chocolate Zucchini Muffin.
Deli: We've recently tried their soups and burgers. While they haven't been a hit with the kids, I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've tried, including the tomato soup and the potato leek soup. Might I suggest offering a vegan hot dog or smokie? That is usually a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIn times past I would have rated this joint a solid 4 or 5 stars. What killed this place in a massive way for me came about as a result of my sunflower seed addiction. You see, I used to power back several of the smaller pre-packed bulk bags of their sunflower seeds. You can imagine my delight when I learned I could purchase a humongous bag of the same seeds. You can also imagine my disappointment when I read on that massive bag that they were sourced from CHINA!! That was a real game-changer for me. I looked on the small bags if they listed the source, and found that they do not. I asked an employee if the small bags contain the same seeds as found in the big bags- they confirmed my fears. I looked at the source country of all the bulk items I could and discovered that some other items were sourced from China.
Honestly, I would rather eat local non-organic ingredients than eat 'Organic' from countries that focus strictly on output and have little to no oversight or regulation. Big, big letdown from a business that I once frequented. No thanks.
Credit where it's due - I love the manager (and other staff is nice). Delicious baked goods. Day-old bread discounts. Etc. Lots to love about the place. I just can't look at it the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs a vegan of 5 years, I was SO EXCITED to shop at a store without having to check labels!! Customer service was very friendly, but I read on their website and was told by employees that everything in the store was plant-based. I was about to purchase what I assumed was plant-based honey, when my partner looked more at the container and told me it was honey made from bees. I went from being thrilled to support a fully plant-based store to upset by the lack of transparency. I guess I have re-learned my lesson to never let my guard down and ALWAYS check labels. I looked again on their website later and you have to go into their FAQs to find out this contradiction. Why oh why would you omit all other animal products, tell customers "everything is plant-based" in-store and on the home page of your website, and then sneak in honey?? Bees are not plants. They make honey for themselves and humans steal it. There are many exploitative aspects involved in the commodification of honey. Please watch Earthling Ed's "Why Vegans Don't Eat Honey" youtube video to understand where I am...
