This place gets a lot of hype in all the tourist books. For $55 Canadian, you get all the seafood chowder you would want, all the steamed mussels you would want, and one of either a lobster (small one), salmon, snow crab, or a steak. You also get a dessert with it. They immediately bring out a basket of biscuits and oat cakes. I loved the oat cakes. The biscuits were underdone and doughy. The soup was fine, although nothing to write home about. We did not want a second bowl.
The first plate of mussels that they brought out had a ton of shells without the actual mussel meat inside. Our second try at the steamed muscles was better. There's not really a sauce with these, but they are very nice and fresh.
I was rather disappointed in my lobster. It was very small. It tasted fine, but was certainly not the freshest most recently cooked version of a whole lobster that I've eaten. Since I wanted to go there for the lobster, it left me rather disappointed. My husband got the snow crab which was actually quite delicious. He says it's a lot easier to eat, which is of course true. So if you go there, I would recommend the snow crab. You might also think about just getting a main course and a salad rather than the whole "All you can eat" opportunity. It's probably not worth the extra expense unless you really do eat a ton. There were several dessert choices, and my husband and I each got one of the two crisps. The filling in them was fine, but the topping was soggy and no sufficiently cooked. I found them to be quite a disappointment. So for the price, it was not a good deal.
In summary, the food is okay. It is certainly not worth the hype. Nor would I go there again if I...
Read moreI absolutely love this place! I am from Ontario but every single time I come down to visit family on isle madame I do a little extra driving just to get this delicious dinner. The restaurant itself is very casual and simple, it has a few different rooms to dine in but I like the sunroom. I've had every single entree here besides the steak. Who wants steak when in the Maritimes? Not me! Seafood all the way. The planked salmon is delicious, the lobster was great and the crab is the best! I always do the all you can eat option . It is by far the best option. It begins with drinks (1 free non alcoholic beverage with meal) and yummy biscuits while you wait for their seafood chowder to come out (which isn't long!). The chowder is very well made, creamy and amazing. After comes the mussels; So fresh and addictive, I eat them by the bucket! Once you have had your fill of the first courses you get your entree of choice. The entree comes with coleslaw, potato salad and garden salad. All homemade and fantastic. For dessert you can choose one slice of the many pies they have or chocolate cake and a tea or coffee. I love the chocolate cake! So rich! And the coffee was a nice finish to a fantastic feast. The price is awesome as well. I have spent more at Red Lobster in Ontario and have not gotten even half of the quality of food I get here. The service here is also fantastic. I have never had a more pleasant service experience. I love this place so much and will return year after year, every single time I visit . BEST....
Read moreThis is more of a lobster hall and less of a lobster restaurant. No pretentiousness here, no need to dress up, leave your air of snobbery in your car because your going to sit down with a whole hall of people excited to get a lobster, crab, steak or fish made simple so that the food speaks for itself.
I'd like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to the staff who treat everyone like a member of the community and not like a tourist passing through.
I call this a hall because unlike a restaurant when you are seated at a table there is a compulsion to engage your neighbours in conversation and this is what makes this place special, unabashed chatting with everyone around you, making new friends, laughing with strangers telling and hearing stories.
Now for the food review. This is not my first lobster, but then I haven't eaten lots of them (and it is later in the season), but I found my lobster a bit small, but well prepared. My eating partner ordered the salmon and we found it dry and overcooked. I have no opinion on the steak or crab so you'll have to fill in the gaps on those.
So in short I'll say your best bet is to order the lobster or crab, you take your chances on the other dishes, but the experience of the hall is what makes eating here...
