My partner took me here for my birthday because we heard about their wood-fire oven pizzas. I checked their menu online days before we arrived so they do have a large selection of pizzas. If you have a difficult time deciding on what pizza to get, order one that you can't get anywhere else.
The restaurant doesn't take reservations, at least on Saturday when we went. So we arrived early. It's a good thing too because the restaurant fills up quite quickly. The personnel are very friendly--the guys at the pizza station said hi to us as we were waiting for a table.
As we were show to our table, I quickly looked at the menu which was the on the table itself. The wine menu is separate and can be found inbetween the salt and pepper. The wines are described wonderfully so you can pair the wine with what you'll be eating. Our server was very friendly and casual but very professional.
Our appetizers arrived and I was so excited. It's been quite a long time since I've had arancini--fried risotto balls. It was the first time my partner tried it and he liked it. I was so grateful to have arancini again. (Thank you for having that on the menu).
Our pizzas arrived after our server took away our finished plates. My partner ordered the classic Margherita. As I have mentioned before, I ordered a pizza I couldn't get anywhere else or would be hard to find in Québec: pizza Sardegna (anchovies, capres, and Kalamata olives). The pizzas were excellent. Yes they were pretty close to pizzas one would have in Naples. If you've never had a pizza from Italy, try this restaurant for their authentic pizza. If you have been to Italy, come to l'Unico to have your pallet remember Italy.
If you're coming here for a special occasion, don't skip out on dessert! Treat yourself. Yes, they do have tiramisù, but I didn't order that. I didn't order that because I saw something else on their menu board which you can find at the front of the restaurant facing the interior. What I ordered wasn't on the menu on the table. I ordered beignets stuffed with Nutella. You get four little delicious and decadent beignets! Believe me, it is worth it!
As there are so many varieties of pizza on l'Unico's menu, we want to try other pizzas on their menu, of course. My partner and I decided to bring another birthday boy to the restaurant for his birthday in May. On va revenir, l'Unico! À...
Read moreThe food and ambiance were excellent, and the owner himself went above and beyond. He refilled our water several times, brought a fresh bottle, cleared our plates, and even took the time to check if everything was to our liking. You can tell he genuinely cares about his customers.
Unfortunately, our waitress with black hair seemed more interested in talking than serving. She spent most of the evening standing at nearby tables going on 5 minutes rants about various subjects while we sat waiting. It was uncomfortable to watch her constantly engage in conversations that had nothing to do with her work while ignoring her own tables.
When my wife asked for two boxes instead of one for our leftovers, the waitress gave a visible look of annoyance as if such a simple request was an inconvenience. When it came time to pay, the instant she saw the tip, which reflected her lack of service but was still fair, her attitude changed completely. She turned cold, refused to say thank you, and gave my wife a glare that could have frozen water.
I would not be making this 3-star review if it weren’t for that death stare after payment and the complete lack of professionalism on the way out. It genuinely ruined the experience and left a bad final impression after what had otherwise been a wonderful experience.
The owner and kitchen staff clearly work hard to make this place special, and they succeed. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is warm, and the establishment itself is absolutely worth recommending. It is simply unfortunate that one waitress can tarnish such a great experience with attitude and arrogance. Maybe her constant rants and forced charm earn her big tips from some tables, but genuine kindness and professionalism go...
Read moreI give this place a 3 because it's really a hit and miss. I came there the first time when they just opened for lunch. We were the first ones to come. The waiter gave us a lot of attention and time as there were not too many people yet. Pizza came fast and the crust is the best I've ever had. Unfortunately next time we came during rush hour. Service was still good but our pizza was burnt... Another time my colleagues went and had food poisoning from unfresh toppings... Last time I went was yesterday... For dinner this time. Service was great as usual... It was crowded so it was a bit slow and our pizzas were burnt again... So overall service is great.. But during rush hour the food quality deteriorates...
