My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here with our adult son on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was quite busy, but we had made a reservation. We had to wait to be seated, although that was not a problem. Our server was efficient but not warm and friendly. That was a bit off-putting. If she wanted to take our order and we weren't ready, she wouldn't return for quite some time. We asked for a couple of minutes and she came back in fifteen. Perhaps she was busy, but the same thing happened when we ordered dessert!
The food was quite good. We ordered beef stroganoff, steak and rack of lamb. All were nicely cooked & attractively presented. The wait time for the food was a little longer than we expected, but we were not in a rush. Our server did check on us once, but she was not as attentive as many patrons would expect.
The price of the meal was higher than expected. I realise that post- pandemic everything costs more. We ordered wine which was priced at triple the retail price! Of course, nowadays you're expected to tip on this fantasy pricing, which adds insult to injury! When I was taught the rules of tipping, alcohol was excluded for this reason. Altogether dinner for three with one appetizer, three entrees, three desserts and wine was $ 320. Perhaps I'm out of touch or perhaps too poor to enjoy a meal out.!
Overall the Gables was a nice experience. The food is good, service so so and the price is at the high end for this...
Read moreI informed the server of my allergies before ordering. They brought out the appetizer and entree dishes clearly containing the ingredients I’m allergic to. She first brought out the appetizer saying she only mentioned the allergy about the entree, not the appetizer, but then brought out the entree with the allergens. After sending the entree back, they sent back the same entree only picking a few pieces out, when I clearly mentioned no there should be no contamination. We asked for water 3 times, the server kept forgetting. The other tables also had complimentary bread and we noticed we did not, and had to request this. My partner asked for a steak knife and the server said that the butter knife was in fact a steak knife and denied him of a steak knife, while the other tables had black steak knives beside their butter knives. My partner ate his entire dish while I waited for my own, so we essentially ate dinner separately. When my dish came out, it was extremely salty and the broccoli was burnt black. This is the second time we’ve been here and both times the service and food did not meet average restaurant quality. Ambience is good. That’s about all that you pay for. They did not offer anything in return for the horrible dinner service, lack of attention, and burnt food. The bill was $210. Never returning or...
Read moreWe're from Toronto and went on a road trip to Kingston when we decided to drop by a good restaurant. We found this place that was seemingly high rated. The place was nice, it had a homely vibe being what looks like a renovated house transformed into a restaurant. The menu looked great and the server was kind. We ordered the crab cakes, the escargot and the mushroom Risotto. The first two were decent, but felt lackluster. However the Risotto was way too salty for the both of us and neither of us could finish it. To be perfectly honest, it's not worth the price they're dishing out. It could be that the chef accidentally tipped over a salt shaker, but they should have tasted the food before serving it. But that's not the end unfortunately, it took way too long to serve this ungodly salty Risotto and to get the bill right after we asked for it. Made a mistake of sitting outside in the evening and being buffeted by mosquitoes for a couple hours before we were able to pay. If it were the ambience and the atmosphere of the place I'd give it a 5, unfortunately what matters most is the food and it wasn't a good experience. The best thing there was the complimentary bread they gave...
