Shen Sushi — Restaurant in Burnaby

Let me start by saying the food here is tasty, it’s decent quality and most of the food is quite delicious. I want to chalk this up as a bad or busy day, but it seems to be a recurring theme based on some other reviews.

Let’s start with some of the positives;

1. food is well made and tasty
2. pricing is decent on most things
3. it’s a great location and can/will get busy

The negatives really stem around one thing, this place isn’t equipped to deal with a full house. When we came to visit, there were two larger parties (us and a table beside us), and a few smaller groups.

We ordered a variety of dishes, see pictures, including sushi and sashimi. Typically you would be given a sauce dish for your soy sauce and wasabi, but not here. The table beside us got sauce dishes for their food though. We asked the waitress for sauce dishes, and she didn’t come back. Asked again, and she pointed to the soy sauce on the table, so made sense, probably miscommunication. This time we asked and we showed her what we meant by showing her that we wanted to dip our sushi or sashimi. She came back with 2 sauce dishes for a table of 8… two! At this point we gave up and used our regular plates, which was covered with our other foods, or dripped the soy sauce directly onto the sushi.

We also ordered sockeye salmon, which they delivered regular, but they were quick to fix that. We ordered salmon pressed sushi, but got tuna instead, I do remember distinctly repeating it was salmon, along with our guests, after she asked to clarify while taking our order. She came back and said she wrote down tuna, so we get tuna.

Overall, I really want to like this place a lot and make it a local sushi spot. I really do want to give this place another chance. I do hope it’s just and off day for them. As I said, the food is good, the pricing is good, but maybe I just need to go for lunch, with a smaller party, or just do take...

Lunch on Good Friday took us to Shen Sushi and wow, this place is an absolute gem!

We ordered a mix of both modern and traditional items from the menu. My husband had a bento box that came with Miso soup, Chicken Teriyaki, California Roll and some Tempura. Our daughter had the B.C. Combo (Dynamite Roll, B.C. Roll and California Roll), and I had Veggie Pocket & Unagi Mini Rice Brick.

The Veggie Pocket & Unagi Mini Rice Brick were so different from anything I've had in any other Japanese restaurant. Such creative fare at Shen Sushi and flawlessly executed as well. My Unagi Mini Rice Brick was a brick of rice as the name implies, but it was battered and fried like Tempura. It was wonderfully crispy as was everything else on the table that was battered and fried. (ie. Tempura in my husband’s Bento Box, and the salmon skin in the B.C. Roll) Veggie Pocket was bursting with flavour, especially paired with the Mango Sauce; I loved the presentation. It was a very creative way to use an Inari wrap compared with the standard Inari Nigiri that we find at most Japanese restaurants.

Fans of "Spirited Away" will recognize a certain character who can be found in quite a few places throughout the restuarant.

There's a mini claw machine there where you can try your luck at winning a candy, for just 25 cents. Our daughter gave it a try. She wasn't able to pick up anything with the machine but they still gave her a candy in the end!

There was also an Easter Egg hunt set up in the restaurant. We had fun finding and photographing all of the eggs!

I usually don’t write review even I wasn’t fan of any places as all people have different expectation and taste. However, here is the review that you recommend to write :) Worst uber order ever experienced. Waited over 3 hours to get delivered, Food was cold and got the wrong item On top of it, The quality of sashimi seems staled, when we looked it up, we found number of parasites from salmon sashimi (we ordered farmed salmon, but they served Sockeye salmon) I was too disgusted to eat any other food I ordered. Ending up throwing everything away.

Here is what happen: Ordered through Uber at 7:20 pm last night Waited for 1.5 hrs, the food wasn’t ready yet. My uber driver got to the restaurant and waited there an hour, still nothing prepared even we called them, they only answered that they will prepare shortly. Ending up waited for 3 hours to get delivered. Food was delivered after 10:30 pm Called the restaurant 3 times, cashier gave the answer that “I am just server here” and speaking with their coworker in Chinese Upon our request talking to manager, she simply answered “oh.. the manager is too busy to talk with you” This is first time seeing the manager is too busy to talk with customer even there is existing ongoing problem. Been ordering and liking this place a lot, but this was the worst experience ever.
