This is THE place to go to for board games in Calgary. I've been coming to D6 since they opened about 2 years ago and it's very heart warming to see the cafe grow in popularity, as it is my favourite place in the city for a fun activity. For a flat rate of $10, you can play as many games as you want without a time restriction if it is not busy. Unlike other board game cafes, you are not required to purchase a drink/food item, although I would highly recommend trying out one of their 20+ hand-crafted speciality drinks, including my favourite, the Pepper Box (6 shots of espresso in 1 drink) or Shillelagh (matcha latte with espresso)! You can roll 2 dice to help narrow down your choice between all the specialty drinks they have. All these monstrously sized drinks are only $8. Along with their large selection of drinks, they also have traditional teas, coffees and lattes as well. Did I also mention their carrot cake is AMAZING here?
The owners, Soloman and Michael, are passionate about board games, knowledgable, friendly, and approachable. They always strive to improve their business, evident by the new reservation system they implemented to ensure everyone can have an opportunity to play games. All the staff there are as equally friendly, approachable and helpful with teaching how to play various games and providing individualized recommendations for new board games to try (shout out to Brennan for being there since day 1 to help broaden my game horizon)! You can also purchase board games from their selection in the front of the cafe.
This place is kid friendly, as they have several family-friendly board games in the left side of the cafe by the washrooms, and they do not serve alcohol. The large array of board games are categorized by both difficulty and game type (strategy, co-op and versus). Washrooms are always clean, board games are well maintained, and the entire cafe is well lit. There are 3 large rooms to rent out for $30/room for 4 hours - great for large parties and D&D. They also host biweekly events such as WarHammar paint nights (Wednesdays) and Developers' nights (Thursdays) where you can help with testing out new board games by local developers!
I strongly recommend reserving your seats online or through the phone if you plan to visit on a weekend or...
Read moreThis place is truly amazing! I held my engagement party here (Large group, we let them know in advance) and I must say... for a place that had been open maybe 12 or so days at that point, they did wonderfully. We had a private room and a section in the back to ourselves. With the layout of the place, our party felt quite private despite being able to see other customers there. The staff were VERY attentive! (This is a very good thing at a board game café) In short, we never felt like we were left wanting. We asked for snacks and they brought menus and delivered on every order. We got thirsty and they delivered on that too. (The beverages here are flipping amazing. Everyone that attended had questioned if they ever had a better latte, mocha, london fog.....coffee and tea stuff in general.) Another point on the staff, they were incredibly knowledgeable!!! We never needed to even look at the rules of the many games we played, they all had that handled. They also checked in, not just on our general wellbeing (Thirst/hunger) but how much fun we were having and how well we understood the games after we left.
Messy review I know but keep in mind we stayed there quite late.
Note: -No alcohol is served here, this is a good thing as the noise stays down and people act like they ought to in a public setting such as this. -The fee to play is one and done. It is a low fee, I think $10 or so. Many other places charge by the hour or by the game you pick out. -The staff are very welcoming and some are even paid to play with you should you need another member so have fun, they are flipping awesome.
Thank you for reading this poorly written review! Keep an eye on the time, it tends to fly...

4.2 out of 5 🌟
Wide variety of board games, as you can see. They are also color coded depending on the difficulty.
If you are a casual person, there are plenty of games to choose from. However, if you are a hardcore gamer and take everything seriously, they also have options for you!
From card games, board games, dice games, etc. Lots of new games you can try out, and a whole day admission is only 10$ You can literally come on opening and leave till they close. Yiu can also ask the employees to explain the game for you if you're too lazy to read the manual.
Plenty of drinks and snacks are available for purchase here as well, which you can add to your tab and pay in the end when you're ready to leave
The place itself is small but there are plenty of tables for many people. There are closed rooms for people who are too loud or just need some privacy. There is plenty of space to park as it is shared with other businesses, so I don't think it will be a problem.
The only thing I don't like is that they don't have full-size meals you can purchase. So you will need to go out and find a place to eat a meal as they only serve snacks and drinks.
Overall, it was a fun place to go to with friends. It's definitely a place to try out often. You'll always find a new fun game...
