Basha Foods International in Sunridge is hands-down one of the best ethnic and halal grocery stores in Calgary. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with the aroma of fresh spices, baked goods, and the energy of a true international market. It’s a one-stop shop for anyone looking for high-quality halal meats, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African groceries, and fresh produce — all at very reasonable prices.
One of the biggest highlights is their halal butcher section. The variety is impressive: you'll find fresh cuts of lamb, beef, goat, and chicken — all certified halal. I’ve personally tried their marinated chicken thighs (perfect for grilling) and their ground beef, which is lean, fresh, and full of flavor. The staff at the meat counter are knowledgeable and will even prepare special cuts upon request.
Their halal deli section also deserves a shoutout. Their chicken shawarma and beef kofta are ready-to-cook, delicious, and perfect for quick meals. Also, their frozen section carries halal nuggets, kebabs, and even halal turkey — a rare find!
Basha also offers an excellent selection of Middle Eastern breads, like fresh pita and markouk, often still warm from the oven. Their imported dates, olive oils, and Arabic coffee are top-notch and competitively priced.
Clean, well-organized, and culturally rich, Basha Foods International is not just a grocery store — it's a culinary journey. Highly recommended for both everyday shopping and stocking up on specialty...
Read moreHalal meats for good cuts and prices, with some pre-marinated options. They have a nice bakery section with decent pastries and cakes- I enjoyed the chocolate 'mousse' (it was more of a chiffon cake) and the mango cakes. They taste best when you get it to order more than by slice. A diverse selection of spices.
However, when I decided to support this local business, it was because I was under the impression all their products would be Halal certified. I bought a Non-Halal balsamic vinegar that has wine vinegar. Understandably, there can be different rulings on vinegars/wine vinegars. However, for me, knowing I now have to be just as thorough about ingredient checking as the regular big-brand groceries when I chose to go to a local specialty store is troubling. Unlikely to recommend Basha to others for any products apart from meat and spices, and even then this has left a poor impression.
Have decently priced and fresh meat pies as well as pita bread! Con: maybe it was a question of freshness on the meat or the rice, a friend and I both became ill with GI symptoms immediately after eating their shawarma platter. Overall, I feel this grocery store can be a...
Read moreI am writing to express my concern regarding a pricing discrepancy I encountered during my recent visit to your store.
I arrived at Basha around 2:00 PM and inquired about the sour plums available. The price displayed in-store was $29 per kilogram, which equates to approximately $13 per pound. However, on your official Instagram page, the same sour plums were advertised at $9.99 per pound.
When I asked a store associate whether there were any other varieties of sour plums, I was informed that this was the only type available. This leads me to believe that the product advertised online is the same as the one being sold in-store, making the pricing inconsistency misleading.
Additionally, I left a comment on your Instagram post to politely raise this concern, but it appears that my comment was removed shortly thereafter. This action further adds to my disappointment, as it suggests a lack of willingness to engage transparently with customer feedback.
I kindly urge your team to review this issue and ensure that your advertised prices accurately reflect what is available in-store. Transparency and consistency are essential for maintaining trust with...
