Golden Dragon Hot Pot is an oriental style hot pot place. Hot pot is customers will order raw ingredients and cook them in a pot of boiling broth. This is common in many Asian cultures.
The location of Golden Dragon Hot Pot can be a bit difficult to reach. It is located within one of the many complexes in Brentwood. The parking is minimal. There are no official parking spots.
The interior of the restaurant looks very pleasing. The tables / benches are a lighter color to counter the darker lighting of the restaurant. There are 2 floors of the restaurant. The tables are a little too close together. Making it feel a tightly packed. The ventilation could be better. When the place is at full capacity with all the pots boiling, it feels very humid.
The food is high quality. Everything from meats to vegetable is a higher quality than most Hot pot places in Calgary. The hot pot balls (generally fish balls) are higher quality than any supermarket brand. They have a very savory taste without being overly salty. There is a cheese filled one, which allows for a very unique taste.
The meat was really good. Very thinly cut, allowing for quick cooking and eating. Definitely give the wagyu beef a try. There is a big difference in both taste and size. The lamb had a slight off taste to it. However, most lamb does have a slightly gamey feel to it. The meat and any other food can be dipped in sauce. The sauce area is self serve. So feel free to create your own.
Customers can order different kinds of soups. Or they can order 2 soups, or even 3 soups. These are all in a single pot with some dividers. Be aware that the spicy soup is intense. It is not for the faint of heart.
The service was decent. At times it was a little slow and if you are on the 2nd floor expect it to be even slower. The food comes out relatively quick. The price is slightly more expensive than other hot pot places. This is not an all you can eat. Customers will be paying for all meat or dishes they order.
Overall, Golden Dragon Hot Pot is a great place to have hot pot. I do recommend to stay away from the spicy broth. Unless you want your entire...
Read moreThe lady at the front greeted us right away and apologized, telling me it would be a 20 min wait. Not a big deal as it was a Sat night. Then she came back within 2 minutes and said that a table cleared up for us. They took us upstairs. There's not a lot of seating even though it's 2 levels. The tables and benches reminded me of the old chinese kung fu movies (I like that). If you're looking for comfortable seating and the feeling of "finer dining", this isn't the place for you. Our host asked if we've been before, to which we said no, it was our first time. She took the time to explain every single broth on their menu, where to find different types of ingredients and directed us to scan the qr code and order online. I loved the clear direction and the online app was easy to use. We then went to make our own dips. It is not as extensive as other Hotpot places, but its definitely sufficient. We came back to our table with our broths and meats already in place, only 6 minutes from when I ordered!! We did the triple broth; medium spicy, shabu shabu and chicken. The flavors were very good. Chicken is super simple, easy for kids. We had 2 adults and 2 hungry kids. We ordered the meal for "2-3" and added just a bit more with noodles, enoki and fish balls. We were totally stuffed with the kids ravaging quite a bit of the meat. I don't know how these other reviews said there weren't a lot of food. The price was quite reasonable for what we got. I would...
Read moreIt was ridiculously hot and humid on the upper floor where we were seated. It was very uncomfortable for an adult, let alone a toddler. Many fans were on, but didn't do much and none pointed at us. Made a request for a highchair on the reservation (and confirmed it on a phone call), but given a table not accommodating for a highchair. My toddler was squeezed between my husband and another guest's seat (making it so uncomfortable for both people). So picture you're a guest, seated right next to a stranger's baby who's crying from the heat, this is very uncomfortable. In addition, there was condensation on the windows.
Your staff did not store your mop and bucket properly. You left the mop on the floor of the bathroom (I saw this when I entered). When I took my older child to the washroom halfway through dinner, he slipped in the washroom. Upon closer inspection, it's a puddle from the mop that was previously there. No wet floor sign in the washroom.
Stairs are slippery.
I've complained about the chairs to a staff member over a year ago during a previous visit. Said they're unstable and the one I was sitting on was splintered and cut my leg (a moderate cut). During the most recent visit, a very elderly man fell because of these chairs.
Overall, the food was good, but won't be returning due to poor atmosphere and parking. Took forever to get water...
