Went here today (sunday nov14) around 2pm to have late lunch. Ordered the duck with rice meal special valued at $16 but server said that wasn’t available but offered me half duck for $19 which totally doesn’t make any sense. ( They have this rice+duck meal for $16 advertised just before you go in the restaurant ). We also ordered wonton w spring roll. Anyway, we were craving for duck and so we still ordered the duck even if they were selling it for $19 with the expectation that it would be hot and fresh. The duck came first and the moment it landed on the table we tried it immediately and it was served cold!!! We then told the guy who served it (he is chinese and i’m assuming he is the owner) and he said he is going to change it. We were expecting that he was going to give us a freshly cooked duck thats hot only to find out a few minutes later that he just had it reheated. It was the same duck and to our dismay, the duck was served barely even warm. At this point, we lost our appetite. The lady server went to us and we told her again about the duck. She just told the guy at the counter about it in chinese but didn’t really do anything for us. They continued talking in chinese but didn’t offer to change the duck or anything to make it right. We barely touched our food. Left the table and proceeded to the counter to pay, they had the audacity to bill us in full with no apologies whatsoever. So I warn you people DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS RESTAURANT. You have been forewarned! TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. Do not give these people your business! WON’T BE...
Read moreI feel compelled to write a review after reading a certain David B’s review of a year ago. While food has not been as exceptional since Gongkee changed management and ownership a few years ago, food there remains to be good with their bbq duck still being the best in calgary (if you want some perspective —- their bbq duck is better than t&t). I feel that the review is way off from reality. The reviewer may have had a bad experience with the staff which coloured his perception and review. And if the reviewer is familiar with eating bbq roasted ducks in other Chinese restaurants, he should know that bbq roasted ducks are hardly served “hot”. Served warm but never hot. And if the reviewer has indeed been to many other Chinese restaurants in the city (as we have), he would find (objectively and without bias) that Gongkee was (and probably) still is one of the top 4 Chinese restaurants in calgary when it comes to TASTE and FLAVOUR . Gongkee may not have the ambiance of a classy restaurant but if you’re looking for good tasting Chinese food, we would still recommend Gongkee over many other Chinese restaurants out there.
But the problem now is that their service has become too inefficient one would think twice eating there or even ordering...
Read moreBeen doing take out food here and I noticed their decent to large servings. I always order the chow mein , pork asado, lechon and duck. The duck and chow mein are my favorites, it will not disappoint. Food is freshly cooked and their duck is flavorful, juicy, buttery and not tough to eat. The chowmein noodles is crispy and the sauce with the vegetables, shrimps and squid are delicious. They can be busy during peak times, but are timely on ordering and pick ups. I usually call ahead to order, which gives them ample time to prepare. Food is warm, and servers are friendly. I recommend to anyone who loves Chinese food. Their kitchen is open and you can observe staff wearing mask, gloves while food is prepared while you wait. Lots of parking outside while waiting or you can wait inside while observing social distancing.
