I used to visit this restaurant regularly and I had rated five star before (See the pic). However I had to recast my older review and downgrade my rating as I had a terrible service experience yesterday (27.8.2021). Myself with my two close allies (who are first time to Masala bhavan) reached at 07:45 pm for dine-in. The restaurant was busy which was not a surprise as it was weekend. However, the management was poor with shortage of staff and we had to wait 30 min for just taking the order.
At 9 pm (!) , only upon requesting multiple times, we received our starter and main course altogether.Shortage of staff is understandable; what was unacceptable was the biased service of the staff at different tables. We were three girls and we had a hard time making the waiter to recognise our table after taking the order , whereas all other tables around us, who joined much lately received their order without any delay ( all of them had atleast one male ) and the staff were found seemingly welcoming to them as opposed to us.This was such an insulting gesture we received which no Indian restaurants in Calgary have done. Moreover, the waiter didn't bother to provide us cutleries on time and we had to wave our hands every time for grabbing their attention. They never bothered to ask us if we need takeout or we need anything else .They simply dumped the food altogether on our table and never turned back. As it was too late and the quality of food wasn't to the usual mark, we felt we simply wasted our time after 45 min travel in bus just to see all these.
Forgetting basic courtesies during peak service hours cannot be justified in any case . We are 💯% sure that this would not have happened if we had a male member in our group. We even had a feeling that if we ordered online from here, would have received food much faster and need not witness such biases.
If you really do care about your service and value your reputation, please train your new staff well.
Thanks for spoiling our nice Friday evening. Afraid to visit Masala...
Read moreI ordered here twice. The first time was good I got lamb biryani and it was delicious and full of lamb. The mango Rasmalai and the sweet lassi was good. It came in a study paper bag which held all my stuff nicely. Though you have to ask for napkin and cutlery as there were none and I was at school at that time. I asked for the second order.
The second time, I ordered paneer Dosai And. They wrapped it in aluminum foil and it was cheaply done with very little paneer...they made it look big by flattening the crepe... but it's flimsy, not filling and the crepe falls apart in your hand so you actually have to use forks and possibly a takeout box and not a huge wrapping of aluminum foil--- it is not worth 14.50. The idli was plain and tasteless, I’ve had better. The vada was good, but in a sense that fried foods are good, but it lacked a bit more flavouring or spices usually associated with vada; I wish I could taste cumin and more onion from the batter... the doughnut itself had one small piece of onion slice—I laughed. I also ordered masala bhavan fish curry..: but for 15.50 there's not a lot of fish or portion overall since it doesn't come with rice, I thought there would be more substance.
The first time I would give a 4.0 and today I give a 2 because the food is good; however, I have so much trouble eating the paneer dosai that it's not enjoyable at all. I don't want to give a 3 in the middle because I'm really upset eating this thing at school and I'm still hungry after the paneer... I will revise if the food taste makes up for it——nope. It was really salty.
I would recommend this place as a dine.in because the food is good; however, when I can I will update the review for the dine in experience. I will recommend the food—but It’s best to have rice dishes to make up for the saltiness. But for take out there's inconsistency in the food being served and the amount you have to pay. Overall stars after twice...
Read moreWe were on the way to this restaurant. This would have been our second visit and last time we visited the restaurant the service was very slow. It took about 50 mins to get our dosas on the table. So this time around we decided to order the food in advance so it will be ready by the time we reach the restaurant for dine in. Some one answers the phone and I say I would like to pre order my dosas, and I will be there in 10 mins. The person responds that they don’t take pre order for dosas, whereas in one of their responses to a review they recommend to pre order because people have complained in multiple reviews that their service is slow. So to this I say last time I had to wait for 50 mins hence we decided to be proactive this time and order before hand. The person tells me very rudely that it might have been busy and he cannot serve me first bypassing the other orders. I never requested for that. I still insist that I would like to pre order, he can start prepping my dosa and I would be there in 10 mins. At the end he again says rudely, the dosa will be ready in 5 mins and if it gets cold it’s my responsibility, to which I say can you please hold on for a minute and he just hangs up. The exact same moment we decided to go to another restaurant and not visit them. The way you speak to your customers go a long way in building a loyal customer base, when you are this rude I don’t think anyone would come eat at such a place where they are disrespected. I am not the only one who complained about their service being slow and I don’t think I will be the last one. Their food is excellent and that is the reason we wanted to visit them again but with this experience I am never going...
