Simmer Hong — Restaurant in Calgary

Went here for an early dinner. This is an interesting restaurant serving northern Chinese food; it’s not hotpot as you would normally conceive it. The food is ‘simmered’ at your table by your server. Once the meat and veggies are finished the server will then stretch noodles and make a soup (in the original pot) to finish your meal. Our pot had spare ribs, shrimp and crab-sticks with the mild spice. We enjoyed it very much. Our server was excellent in explaining how things worked in both English and Mandarin. The service was pretty good until it got busy, but then it dropped off after that. Our thought was that next time we should order things that stand up to possibly being overcooked (ie our shrimp ended up overdone). Only complaint is that our clothes and hair and jackets smelled strongly of hotpot once we left, so unless the restaurant invests in some HVAC, guests should be aware they’ll smell of food the rest of the night. Went there twice. First time tried beef n second time frog legs. Taste: Beef pot tasted so-so, frog leg tasted not good, too strong fish smell. Portion: I have to say portion is way too small, not much ingredients, for two of us is not enough. Price: Around $45-55 per pot, honestly it is expensive compared to what it serves, with this price u can have much better food and eat full in other Chinese restaurant. This is my second time ordered through Fantuan app, you can get 40% off for pick up order. Love the portion side, noodles are delicious, but if you can't take spices make sure to indicate that when you order. The hotpot you can select the items you want to add in it, price per item.
