Hands down, the BEST chicken I've ever had in my life. And I don't say that lightly -- I've had some good chicken! I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Uniquely delicious food and warm, welcoming service.
I was staying at the Super 8 Motel behind The Greek Corner while doing a cross-country trip to B.C. for a new job. I was tired after a 7 hour drive from Regina and just looking for an easy dinner. I saw the Greek restaurant and immediately began craving a souvlaki, which I'd had many times before in my home city of Montreal. So I picked myself up off my motel bed (with some effort) and walked over to The Greek Corner, expecting a quick souvlaki sandwich before an early sleep.
The second I walked through that unassuming front door, I knew I was in a special restaurant. Beautifully decorated with wonderful photos from all over Greece, with a blue colour theme and Ancient Greek symbolism encircling the wall near the ceiling. The tables were nice and well set. A man and a woman (I believe it's family owned) were the only ones in the restaurant when I entered. The man greeted me and was very warm and welcoming (I wish I got his name!).
I sat at a table alone and browsed the menu. I didn't recognize any of the names, so I got a recommendation from the man, and asked for the chicken plate. He got all excited and assured me I would love it. I took his word for it. A true restaurant owner who was proud of his food! And let me tell you, the pride is well deserved. I sat very comfortably admiring the decorations and photos in the restaurant while I waited, and the man was quick to refill my glass with fresh, icy water. We chatted a little bit as I waited.
I decided to take my food back to the motel room to eat, which I regretted the second I took my first bite. It was SOOO delicious and unique, I wish the chef (who I believe was the woman) was there to see my face after that first bite.
The chicken was immensely tender, uniquely tasty, and just wonderfully delicious through to the last bite... worthy of savouring rather than just blasting through. Served on a bed of yummy rice, with two pieces of potato and a green bean/tomato side, with a good portion of Tzatziki and pita bread... I must say it was by far the best food I've had all trip (I was coming from Nova Scotia so... that's the whole country!) and one of the best meals I've ever had in my life.
Whether you are from Calgary, or just passing through on your way east or west, I HIGHLY recommend stopping by The Greek Corner for a uniquely delicious meal and a warm welcome from the owners. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Blessings to the family and all who...
Read moreI dined at The Greek Corner with my husband and two teenagers for lunch on Saturday, September 7. We have travelled to Greece a few times and I have a close Greek friend who cooked Greek food for us often and taught me many of her recipes so we were excited to try a Greek restaurant in Calgary we hadn’t been to yet.
The restaurant is in a small strip mall with free parking off Macleod Trail. It is fairly unassuming from the outside and once inside there are mainly tables for two and a couple of tables for four. We were welcomed by Yianni and shown a table.
For starters we shared the Trio Dip with pita which had Tzatziki, hummus, and Kopanisti (a mildly spicy feta with red pepper dip). The hummus had more of a smoky flavour than I am used to but it is very good. We also shared the Appetizer Platter which had Calamari, Spanakopita, Dolmades, Triopita, Befteki, and Tzatziki dip.
My kids love the Costco spanakopita but the fresh baked one here took it to a whole new level of love! My daughter also ordered the Befteki meatballs for her main course. My son had the chicken Souvlaki Wrap. And my husband ordered the Kleftiko, which is roasted lamb which came with a side Greek salad.
I ordered the Pastitsio for my main course. It has layers of Greek pasta with meat sauce topped with Bechamel sauce. The Bechamel sauce was perfectly light and fluffy while the pasta and meat sauce was nicely seasoned with spices. I like to use a lot of cinnamon when I make mine, but there was nothing overpowering their dish.
My main dish came with a Greek salad which was delicious and fresh with the perfect ratio of vegetables, feta and dressing.
For dessert we tried all three homemade desserts. First we had baklava, this was not a regular small piece of baklava that I see in a lot of Calgary restaurants. It was delicious and incredibly fresh. Ekmek Kataifi was my favourite of the three deseerts we shared. It’s a layered Kataifi filo pastry with cream custard on top, whipping cream and sprinkled almonds and chinnamon. The third dessert we tried was the Bougatsa, which is a Filo pastry with cream custard with icing sugar and cinnamon on the top. This was the smallest looking of the three desserts, but just as delicious.
I think what sets this place apart from many restaurants is that Yianni and Kiki clearly care about what they are doing and how guests feel about dining there. The food is clearly made with love, and you can tell they genuinely care.
We are talking about going back soon to try more off their menu and I am already recommending it to family...
Read moreGreat new family-run authentic Greek restaurant. The host (Dad) is friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. The cook (Mom) knows her stuff and delivers family style dishes. The couple has a lot of restaurant experience, so they know what they're doing. The restaurant is spotlessly clean and has a diner vibe. The owners are responsive to clients needs, such as adjusting the music volume to allow for good conversation. Our group ordered 3 appetizers; saganaki (fried cheese), calamari (breaded squid with tzatziki in the side), and 3-dip trio (with toasted pita bread). All 3 were excellent. The saganaki was not lit on fire, but was fried crisp. The calamari was crisp, tasty, and not greasy.. The tzatziki (yoghurt, cucumber, and garlic) was tasty and plentiful. There was not enough pita with the 3-dip trio, but the owner was happy to bring more on request. We ordered 4 mains; 2 x Kleftico (roasted lamb), chicken souvlaki, and roasted ribs with Greek salad. Serving sizes were good. Spicing and presentation was traditional (rice, potato, and veg sides). I personally would have liked more fat in the Lamb, but the other guest appreciated the lean. The souvlaki and ribs were topped with a delicious lemon butter sauce. We ordered 3 desserts; bougatsa (hot philo-wrapped custard), ekmek (cold layers of pistachio, custard, and shredded philo), and lemon cake (special of the night - brown cake soaked with lemon sauce). All 3 were excellent, and I suggest ordering all 3 and take home what you don't finish. This restaurant is a great new addition to the Calgary dining scene. The owners are good people, and will earn customer loyalty. The food is authentic. Highly...
