Really enjoyed eating here. Tried it with my wife for the first time yesterday, we also had our 7 month old baby with us. They had a small selection of high chairs which certainly made our meal more enjoyable. At first sitting down, i did not know what to expect. It was not a semi formal moxies or browns type feel at all (which i was ok with with), but they had a no frills kinda vibe. Looking at the menu, their prices were very reasonable. They had an small but diverse selection of food, and right away they dropped off tortilla chips with a selection of salsa/hot sauces to go with it. Their sauces were very nice and had a large array of flavours, some more hot, some less. I was shocked that there was no scratch pico on the table however. After reviewing their drinks menu, i felt their drinks were a tad pricey, but then i noticed their daily specials gave some very reasonably priced options. I ordered their beer special ($4) and my wife order their margarita ($7.75). I will say i expected way more from their margarita. The flavour was ok, but it was in a small cup loaded with ice, maybe 3 gulps of actual drink in it. It was pretty disappointing given the cost. I wasn't to urked about the drink cost however, because it looked like they balance it out with very reasonable priced entree's and appy's. After a few sips we figured we were ready to order. My wife ordered their 3 taco plate (all with different meats) and i ordered a barbacoa burrito, and their Chicharrón as an appy. When the chicharron's came, i was pretty disappointed to find this was a plant based plate. Instead of fresh crispy salted pork rinds, it ended up being some rice puffs that were seasoned and served with valentina sauce. It was actually tasty, but it should be labeled as something else on the menu. Once the meals came, it was a very simple dish, no side rice and beans, just a burrito on one plate, and three tacos on the other. But it tasted fantastic. Even though it didn't look like it at first, they were very filling, my burrito was packed with meat (it was barely closed) and bursting with flavour, the tacos my wife had were no exception. You could tell they labour to get the best seasoned traditional flavour around, it was the best flavoured Mexican food i have had in a long time. I also noticed they had a very traditional Mexican tortilla soup on the menu that i can't wait to get back to try. Our meal (3 drinks, two entrees, and an appy) landed at $43 before tip, and was worth every cent.
My conclusion, Two thumbs up, and i will be going back....hopefully soon. A super simple place where their main focus is delivering flavour packed scratch Mexican food. They have a few wrinkles to iron out, but nothing left a bad taste in my mouth. If you're looking for an awesome first date spot or no pressure lunch, this is perfect. Seating wouldn't be great for a larger group, but for an us-four-no-more spot to eat, certainly consider hugo's. If they end up improving their drinks menu prices or drink sizes and include some fresh pico, they will bump up to a five...
Read moreBooked a last minute reso for a large surprise party of 16 and despite them already being committed to another large reso of 20, they fit us in with less then 24 hours from time of inquiry. Our server was fantastic and never stopped moving. If she wasnt refilling someone's water or taking someone's order she was getting the wifi password for the little ones, grabbing extra plates and napkins, bringing margaritas etc! She even managed to give me the secret signal for the cake and managed to sneak the cake topper and candles that I forgot in my bag from the table to the kitchen without the birthday girl noticing. We had a variety of changes to our orders - no this, extra that, change the sauce etc and everything arrived to the table exactly as requested and not a single one of us went thirsty as beverages were kept topped up and fresh. Everyone left the table with full bellies and continued conversation in the parking lot about how delicious their meals were.
I was incredibly impressed at the efficeny of the team as they had two large resos that were executed so beautifully all the while still tending to the varying sizes of walk in groups.
We were also served complimentary chips with 3 types of salsa, all of which were delicious and the chips were crispy and defiently fresh but not oily of any kind.
Bathrooms were clean, cutlery was clean, table was set up for us ahead of time, smiles were given - all in all 12/10 experience. I will defiently be back to eat my way thru the menu!!
only managed to get one picture as we were too busy stuffing our faces and enjoying each...
Read moreBeen here twice now which means that I can do a review considering both visits. Food was good the first time which brought us back again the second time. The second visit there was way too much rice and not enough meat. I am talking specifically about the burrito that I ordered and my wife's 'TacoLoco'. We could hardly find any meat in it. I do not like rice to begin with so that was a bummer.
Service was mediocre the first time and we assumed it was just a bad night. The service was far worse the second time. Took 20 minutes from the time we sat down to actually get our beverages we ordered. They brought water out which we had to pour ourselves and it did not have ice in the water ( we were sitting outside ).
So much potential for this place but the service & limited seating is an issue. I saw a few people turned away because it only appears they have about 3-4 tables that can hold 4 people. It's mostly just 2 people tables.
Servers need to be taught how to upsell (this is for the business owner to read). Ask if a customer wants a double over a single, ask if the customer wants caramel with their churros, ask if you want pico with your chips (which our chips and guac came with the first time and not the second).
Selection was limited as well, they only had 1 draft beer, and they were out of caramel for their churros..
The review might seem picky but again it's just my review. I think the servers definitely could be more attentive.
All in all food is ok but the food is only half the experience...
