Being from the states, I've had my fair share of fried foods in my lifetime. The fried Haddock and Halibut is the greatest fried fish in the entire northern hemisphere. I'll put my money to my mouth on that! Every savory bite was as if it was blessed by the hands of the Pope himself and baptized in holy oils to deliver us all from the evils of a foul supper. Captain George's Fish & Chips is my church, and I'm a believer!
In comparison, Long John Silvers fried fish in the US is like if they rolled up a washcloth, soaked it in fish juice brine, battered it 46 times, and fried it for 10 days straight. They do something unholy to that poor cod before they serve it up to unsuspecting victims. Weary is the soul who may be yearning to relive the magical experience of genuine fish and chips, only to be gifted a horrendous patette of putrid, seafood mush. It's as disgusting as it sounds and you should be grateful you are free of such abominations here in Canada.
I'm heading home today to Pennsylvania, and I am a mixture of mad, sad, and blissfully happy. Mad that there is NOTHING quite as good in the states. Sad that I won't be able to have such delicious fish until I return again. Happy to have a lingering memory of every delicious, crispy, savory morsel to carry me through the long journey home.
Be well, Captain George's Fish & Chips. I'll be back again someday soon. Sincerely always...
Read moreMy family gets Halibut & Chips from Captain George's often, however the other two restaurants that we normally get it from happened to be closed because it was a holiday, so we decided to try this location. Big mistake. We ordered a family meal which consisted of a large fry and 8 pieces of Halibut with all condiments added in the bag. We had to throw the fries out because they were hard as a rock and burnt, we also didn't eat half the fish because that was also burnt. The fish was so hard we couldn't even cut it with a knife, it was chewy like jerky, and 60% of it was just burnt batter. There were none of the condiments we asked for in the bag. Not only that, but my mom had a bad allergic reaction from something in the fish which has never happened at the other Captain George's locations, so I'm not sure what happened there. The staff were somewhat pleasant but they seem flustered because they were very busy. Also the atmosphere was ok, nothing special. Overall, I think we will stick with the other...
Read moreAbsolutely loved my stay here at Capt George's. The restaurant was clean and the staff were very friendly and attentive. They took their time to explain the specials and any questions i had with the menu. I ordered the Halibut and it was one of the best that I've ever had. Soft tender and crispy golden on the outside. The fries were crispy as well! Being from Oshawa it's well worth the short drive over for some quality English style fish and chips. Id recommend the cocounut cream pie as a dessert even if youre not a fan of coconut. Its the best ive had yet. Soft flaky and baked perfectly.
I noticed a lot of other patrons had Greek style dishes which looked really good as well. I will try them next as this also seems very popular. I can always appreciate an extensive menu with good options!
The prices are fair, the food tastes great and the portion sizes are very filling. What more can anyone want? My go to spot for fish and chips from now on....
