My family loves fish, but I'm not as big on it. That said, I've eaten a lot of it and been to numerous fish and chip restaurants. For instance, we used to go to Old Tyme every Friday, my grandparents frequented Captain George's and my grandpa and I have been to Halibut House in Port Perry a lot. We also used to go to the restaurant by the OC a lot, 20 years ago.
The Halibut House in Bowmanville may be the best, or is at least right up at the top. The food is really good, the prices are great and the servers are wonderful. Karen especially.
One week this winter, I was there 4 times, for breakfast, lunch and supper. All meals were excellent.
The breakfasts are affordable, and have really good portions and taste.
The fish is always really good, but I'm sick of fish. You can get an excellent sole and fries meal for $10.
The chicken fingers are really good, but I now prefer the burgers. I didn't think they'd had one, but am glad they do. The burgers at Captain George's are excellent, but we have not been there in a while. Everyone just wants to go here.
I was given the choice of where to go last night, and chose here even though I'd been to the Port Perry one on Monday night. I'd heard my burger and fries were only $12.99 and my pop was about $1, so I decided to get two.
We brought family friends who really liked the food and our waitress. Spent a lot of time looking at photos of regulars.
My friend ordered shrimp, and got lots. She really liked it.
We will definitely be back. I may come in myself, for more burgers and fries, soon. They treat their customers very well, and are at the top for customer service. It helps that the food is so good, plentiful, varied...
Read moreIt's not often I'll write a review, and then feel satisfied enough to give it a 5 star rating right across the board. The halibut house in Bowmanville, is one of the best kept secrets for a great meal at a reasonable price. Its ability to adapt to the needs of its patrons, supersedes its growing reputation. I can say this because both my friend and I, have visited this warm friendly restaurant once a week, for the past 2 1/2 years. It's been here in this restaurant, that we have become part of a community spirit evolving. If you're looking for friendly service, a sense of relaxation, comfort and great pricing for a breakfast/lunch/dinner... then look no more. You found it. Among the friendly waitresses, is Karen, who hails originally from the warm embracing province of Newfoundland. Both my friend and I, can't say enough about this waitress. Karen always remembers our names, knows our usual and always greets us with a big smile. Now keep in mind, Karen might cuss a wee bit, but she's a real person, and this is a warm hearted individual who cares about people, she'll be the first one to speak up when someone isn't being treated right or unfairly put down. You just have to meet her to understand what I'm saying. If you visit the Halibut house, you'll find availability to a copy of the Toronto Sun, a community of picture albums hosting the local patrons placed on a table, and most of all, the friendship of acquaintances that come and go, and when they return, greet you with...
Read moreWe are regulars, and I've been to this restaurant three or four times in one week before. It actually wasn't that long ago, either. I go with my grandpa and my dad, both of whom love fish and chips. I get burgers, though, because I'm sick of fish and never liked battered fish all that much to begin with. Though I have gotten it here before, and do like it.
Anyways, this was never our regular fish and chip place until recent years. Up to the pandemic, we were regulars at Old Tyme for 20 years and my grandpa was a regular at Captain George's. Both were good. Captain George's still is. However, this place has overtaken it.
Karen and Amanda are great waitresses, and it's always an experience going here. They're good to their regulars, keep photo albums and care. They look out for what's best for customers, and offer tips (like keeping the bag open when getting takeout, so that things don't get soggy), offer extra fries and are vigilant. They also keep the place very clean as they socialize.
The breakfast is good, the burgers are generally really good, the coleslaw is very good (it's not that DISGUSTING creamy kind), and I actually choose to go here sometimes. I never used to do that with fish and...
