Traditional fish and chips well made and clean environment. I would say the beer I had was very very amateur not really what I'd call a craft beer more like a "kit beer" . So more homemade than craft. Couldn't finish the pint I had. It tasted like something I made in my kitchen 20 years ago. The stock beer was ok but I thought it'd be nice to try something from a micro brewery. It wasn't in my estimate. Plus the price for the beer is pretty high given the quality. Typically everything in Collingwood is quite pricey as far as food is concerned and this place is no exception. Fish is always going to be expensive in general and kudos this was not greasy fish and chips like usual. The cole slaw is homemade and not insanely vinegar like others so decent. But still too expensive to want to do a return visit for me. You are into some serious coin just for two fish and chip dinners especially if ordering Halibut. I have had very good fish and chips in Toronto and had Halibut for the same price or less than the cost for the Haddock at this place. So for the occasional bite it is ok but for just potatoes and fish it is too expensive.
The restraunt gets its first star because of its nice inviting look...at first. However, it is awarded no more stars after that because it is far from inviting, especially for families.
We went in with our family of two children and the children were served with a giant pint glass of water. Laughing in my head when my 2 year old was goggling at the chance to partake on this challenge, I realized this owner has no young children. So, I asked for a straw. She replied that they are part of the "No Straw Movement." I respected that and said, "No problem I'll get their juice boxes." The owner didn't like that idea either. Never have I seen a place that was so unaccommodating to childrens' needs.
She then continued in a condescending tone about our child rearing skills and how our 2 year old toddler should be able to drink out of giant crystal glasses. I guess we are failures at parenting. Or just mindful of their abilities. Who knows.
If you're doing a no straw movement, have alternatives for children. And don't be rude to families or people in general.
It's safe to say we left and went to an awesome welcoming place down the road, The Olde Red Hen. So if you walk by Fish and Sips, keep walking because you are just steps away from a real establishment, The Olde Red Hen just down the road! The Olde Red Hen has reasonable prices and a welcoming atmosphere. Families are welcome and straws...
Read moreWe were taking our dog to Collingwood today because they have dog-friendly beaches. Last night, I called Fish & Sips to see if it was okay to bring Arya (our 5 year old Cocker Spaniel). They said absolutely. I had read a few reviews and was interested to see the restaurant.
Well, we certainly weren't disappointed. We sat on the patio, as we had Arya with us, and it was a lovely day anyway. Arya loves fish, so we ordered her poached haddock, and I had cod and chips, while my girlfriend had scallops and chips and we ordered extra coleslaw.
The breading couldn't have been thinner, and the fish was plentiful. All too often, the breading is thick and reveals a tiny piece of fish. Not here!
The scallops were smaller than what I have enjoyed in the Maritimes, but a scallop is a scallop :) They are still about the diameter of a loonie and the same thin breading was on them.
Our server said the breading is a trade secret and only one person knows whats in it. ;) It's delicious, is what it is. Light, flaky, crisp and just enough to coat the seafood.
Our server was knowledgeable, very friendly and attentive. She even offered cold water for Arya, but we brought that with us.
I will make it a point to visit Fish & Sips again the next time I find myself in Collingwood. We were 100% impressed with everything.
