I've been coming to Donair town for a number of years since '96 way back when there was only 1 Donair town located in Port Coquitlam near Shaughnessy close to the old bowling alley.
The Donair's were priced $5.00 for a regular and $6.50 for a super. I think Chicken was $0.50 more.
After the franchise was sold and became a chain, the taste was never exactly the same. For example: The pita was placed in the microwave, meat placed in the pita, sauced, the filled with vegetables. The regular sized pita was of hefty weight and nicely sized. The Super was very large and essentially bursting at the seems of the Donair.
Fast forward to the present, this location has a second new owner. The chicken is underseasoned, which is surprising. the chicken did not appear fresh. I believe the combination of the lack of flavour and issues with freshness were possibly due to the chicken being in the warmer for too long; as a result, the chicken lost flavour and became tough.
I ordered a super, and the size of the donair was more comparable to a regular at other establishments, and if you were to compare the size to the regulars of the past, the super was smaller than the regular of yester-years.
With all due respect, the cost of produce and the cost of raising farm animals has gone up. In fairness, raising the price would be preferable to compromising the overall quality of the product.
tl;dr - Lost stars due to 1) underseasoned chicken and 2) questionable freshness of the chicken (tough &...
Read moreSuper disappointed by what I received. The Greek salad was just some plain cut up cucumber and a SINGLE piece of tomato.. no flavor or anything. The hummus tastes terrible and feels like a cream? I have no better way to describe that. The chicken wasn't...bad..? But it did not taste right? When I have gone to any other place of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cuisine, the chicken has a certain way that it tastes that makes it almost distinct to that ethnicity and this just did not taste like it at all.. it just tasted like basic chicken.. the sauces on top just seemed incredibly salty and the rice was just mushy and plain.
I really wasn't expecting to be so disappointed, first and last time at this location. If you're thinking of going here I highly recommend driving the extra 5 minutes to Burquitlam Station area, there's a Donair Town there that is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. The man who owns it is lovely and his chicken is the absolute best, he takes so much pride in his food and so much care for his customers. Portions are giant, you get a choice of what salad you want and it's PROPERLY made. His rice is so flavourful on its own and when you combine everything it's...

Mans heated the pitas in a microwave, with the plastic BAG still on.. crazy. Heating in a microwave is already unacceptable but with a plastic bag???? Holy. Use a press like any other decent donair place. The falafel was also heated in the microwave, which is wack a f... any other place ever uses a deep fryer. No olive, weak salad, just penny pinching at every corner.
Rice was some plain white rice that just seems off. Lady at the front was nice but.. man this place is probably the worst joint on Austin. How it's still around is mind blowing. Many, many years ago this place was run by some German folks and was awesome. This place could feature on some nightmare kitchen type documentary now with the practices they're doing, and that's the level of guidance it would need to get things to an acceptable level. R.I.P Donair Town Austin....
