Read moreTLDR: the coffee is good but if you're not white, the staff might not make you feel very welcome.
So I've been here about a handful of times. When I went with my white friends, or white partner, I never had any issues; in fact, the staff were really nice to me on those occasions. However, recently I went here a couple of times alone (I'm a middle eastern woman), and the staff made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. They weren't overtly rude with me, but they were very short with me, looking at me as if I was a strange person, and just made me feel unwelcome there. The lady at the cash was so cold towards me and stared at me the entire time I was in the shop as if there was something wrong with me. It was just a very negative and hostile energy towards a friendly customer, for no apparent reason.
Today I spoke with one of my brown friends, who is one of THE friendliest guys who also had this kind of negative experience with staff at Cafe Good Luck. He told me that when he was there, he was asking for a specific coffee product and the staff member he was speaking with couldn't quite understand his accent. So he started to spell the name of the product, and the staff member got angry with him and raised his voice to say something along the lines of "THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!"... Is this how we treat paying customers who are kindly asking about a product? This is not very friendly, accommodating, or kind.
I don't normally leave comments. I'd normally just never go back to a place like this. But I think it's important for people to know about these kinds of...
Read moreFirst, the name. Cafe Goodluck is such a straightforward, positive appellation that you can’t help but be charmed from first hearing about it. Walking in, you’re greeted by a cozy atmosphere and cheerful staff that make you feel welcome. If I weren’t in the city for business, I’d certainly be back! The logo, an adorably derpy-looking horse, is endearing and I so wish it was on more merchandise! “Drink coffee, go so fast” is exactly what that horse would say, and it’s just too bad that slogan isn’t on more merch. I had the Americano and a ginger cookie, both of which were great. The coffee was served in a special mug that I forget the name of, but he point is that even that was specially selected. Can’t exactly say what it is, but everything that went into this establishment feels curated, like you’ve been invited into someone’s beautiful world, and you’ll appreciate that for sure! Would I make a special trip? If you want to hit up cafes you can’t miss it! If you’re in Dartmouth, you gotta go. But if you see the photos and read this review and aren’t charmed, then you’re probably ok skipping. Overall, Cafe Goodluck has a unique character that I found especially charming. If that appeals to you, make the trip! Just wish they had more of that horse...
