I recently moved back to the Tsawwassen area after being away for ten years. Alfa was one of the restaurants we used to frequent regularly, and I have many fond memories of it. Since returning, we’ve been back twice and noticed that it is now under new ownership. Unfortunately, the restaurant feels like it’s in need of significant upgrades—it hasn’t really changed in at least 25 years.
I also found that the food quality wasn’t what it used to be. It wasn’t terrible, but definitely below average and not nearly as good as I remembered.
On our second visit, something quite appalling happened. My wife and I each ordered a glass of red wine. Mine was fine, but hers was clearly off—it was obvious the bottle had been open too long and had spoiled. When the server eventually came by, I let her know. She took the glass away and said she would see what could be done. In the meantime, I gave my wife half of mine so she could at least enjoy a glass.
After quite a long wait, the server returned with a small taster from a freshly opened bottle of the same wine. It was fine, but by then we had lost interest and declined. Later, when the bill arrived, the charge for the bad glass of wine was still on it. When I pointed this out, the server said she would speak with the manager. After another long delay, she returned and explained that the manager would only offer a 50% discount on the undrinkable wine.
On the way out, I spoke directly with the owner/manager. He could not explain his reasoning, only that he was unwilling to remove the charge and would only reduce it by half. I have never encountered anything so preposterous in a restaurant before, and I was frankly astounded.
Needless to say, we will never visit this restaurant again—and neither will our family or friends, who are numerous in the area. After sharing this story with a few people, several mentioned they had already noticed the restaurant’s decline and had no interest in returning.
Between the dated condition of Alfa, the lowered quality of the food, and this appalling example of management, I don’t see how the restaurant can survive much longer. Any business run in this manner is, unfortunately, on...
Read moreWe went out for greek food last night at Alfa Greco and unfortunately it was not as good as usual. We had a nice table outside on the patio and it was a great table as it was secluded and away from the other tables. I think that the restaurant has all new staff. We noticed it the last time we had dinner here that most of the wait staff we were used to were not there. We ordered a bottle of wine and was opened, a small amount poured into our glasses and then the waiter walked away. He didn't even wait for us to taste the wine. We shared an order of calamari and it was very good. For entrees my husband had barbecue spareribs with spaghetti and it was also very good. I ordered the moussaka and it was probably the worse moussaka that I've had. There was next to no bechamel sauce on the top and what was there was dry and inedible. The meat itself was also not good. I sent it back and did not order another entree. They offered me a dessert on the house to compensate for the moussaka. We shared a key lime cheesecake and it was very good. When the bill was presented we had been charged for the moussaka. If I had known that by accepting the dessert I would still be charged for the moussaka I would have declined the offer. At no time did the manager come out to talk to us. We will probably give Alfa Greco another try because it has been one of our favorite restaurants but last night was very...
Read moreDisappointed. I have ordered from Alpha many times in the past six years and ate in as well. Went to Alpha tonight looking forward to having ravioli. The menu advertised ravioli filled with meat. I ordered it, in part, because I need to have protein in my diet, especially to offset carbs when I have pasta. The raviolis were actually mini raviolis that were not filled with much meat at all, but rather had a little meat in them. The marinara meat sauce lacked typical Italian spices like garlic. I usually can taste the Italian spices and the zesty tomatoes in this kind of sauce when I have it elsewhere. The sauce had a bland taste instead. I complained to the waiter, who was empathetic and polite, and did the other parts of his job well enough, but nothing was offered, like a discount or an alternative meal or snack to make up for a dinner that was so tasteless that I hardly ate any of it. I then paid my bill and tip to the tune of $84 CAD for two entree’s and a shared salad , and two drinks. In many ways, this restaurant is such a nice gathering place, and the staff can be very friendly. The Greek side of the menu is pretty good. The items on the Italian side (except for the garlic bread) are so lacking. That plus the failure of management to respond to my concerns, particularly as a once loyal customer , leave me questioning if I will...
