Last time I went to a Burger Baron must have been 11+ years ago in Edmonton. Back then what I got was so-so - it was food and I ate it. Did not have much interest in going back. Decided to visit the Drayton Valley Burger Baron on a whim as I did not feel like giving my money to a mega corporation that day. All I wanted was a quick snack before getting back on the road, and I was not expecting much.
Looking at the menu for burgers (there were quite a few choices), I observed that the prices were a lot better than expected - double-patty around $6.50 give or take depending on the kind. I did not look at sides or drinks - again, just wanted a snack.
Was not expecting much for that price - go to Wendy's and pay 1.5x that for something you remember being better. What I got here was a work of art.
My burger was big, loaded, heavy, dripping - hardly fit in my hands. I could not believe the size and quality for what I paid (again, not speaking on sides or the like - just the burger). Had to clean my hands after from the sauce. Very impressed; I was very happy I came.
The place itself is old-school, from a different time and world when things were family run. Small children distracting themselves behind the counter while the elders work. The first thought was a moment of recoil - dangerous, unsanitary! We are not used to seeing this anymore in sterile North America. Remember though, this is how things used to (and some might argue should) be, where the whole family worked together to keep the business going. Once over the momentary shock, it's charming in its own way.
The place is clean, they don't have a public bathroom but you can use the staff washroom if you ask. Sadly I live four hours away so cannot frequent this place, but I would gladly go back if I could. A place like this deserves the business....
Read moreI had a really unexpected and meaningful experience at Burger Baron today. A neighbour invited me out for something to eat, and I had no idea I would be walking into a place owned by someone I had not seen in years. Omar is an old friend of a close friend who sadly passed away a long time ago. I had no idea he and his family ran the restaurant.
Even though he was busy handling orders and working the counter, we managed to catch up and chat in between. It was a genuine moment filled with quick conversations that brought back old memories and familiar faces. When it came time to pay, Omar refused to let me. He covered the meal without hesitation, and it honestly meant a lot. It was not just generous, it was thoughtful.
The food was great. Classic, well-made, and full of the comfort you hope for in a place like this. There is something special about a restaurant that serves good food and good energy at the same time.
Much respect to Omar and his family for running a place that feels more like a part of the community than just a burger spot. I will definitely be back, and if you have not...
Read moreOrdered two Pomo burgers corn fritters onion rings, a drink and a milkshake. Cost $31. Not what I excepted for the burgers, very disappointing. I was already back on the highway when I opened the first burger. Not worth going back
Response to owner, thanks for response. I wasn’t concerned about the total price, my review was of the actual burger, as you can see from the picture I posted, it was a bare bun burger with a few pieces of pineapple and a dab of sauce. Not very appealing
Response. I live in Edmonton so driving back to Drayton Valley in the near future is not very likely. Thank you...
