Azucar Taco House: A Culinary Delight Marred by Service Shortcomings
Nestled in the end of a strip mall, you will find a local taco house. It is adorned with traditional Mexican decor, Azucar Taco House offers a vibrant and visually appealing dining environment. Upon arrival at 6:53 PM on a bustling Saturday evening, we were greeted by the sight of a car meet in the parking lot, adding to the anticipation of a busy night. Contrary to expectations, the interior was not overly crowded, yet this did little to mitigate the disappointing service experience that followed.
Despite the initial excitement, our visit began on a sour note. We were not welcomed or offered menus upon entering. After waiting for clarity, we approached the bar and were told to seat ourselves. This marked the start of a lengthy and frustrating wait. Thirty minutes passed without menus, prompting my spouse to seek assistance from a male worker who seemed to be a manager. His brusque response, directing us to non-existent menus at the back of the restaurant, only compounded our frustration. Eventually, I managed to flag down a server who provided us with menus.
Our order consisted of water, carnitas tacos, and birria tacos. The wait for our food felt interminable, with our tacos finally arriving at 8:10 PM. The lack of prompt service extended to the small yet crucial detail of water refills, which we had to request ourselves.
However, the culinary experience at Azucar Taco House redeemed itself with the arrival of our food. The birria tacos stood out with tender, flavorful meat, although the accompanying dip was overly salty. The carnitas tacos were equally satisfying, boasting a generous portion of well-seasoned meat. Despite the lengthy wait, the tacos were worth the anticipation.
To avoid another extended wait, we preemptively ordered churros when our tacos arrived. Surprisingly, these came swiftly within 15 minutes, accompanied by ice cream and berries. The churros were well-cooked and delicious, a sweet conclusion to our meal.
In summary, Azucar Taco House offers commendable food that showcases the rich flavors of Mexican cuisine. The carnitas and birria tacos, in particular, are worth highlighting for their taste and quality. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience is severely hampered by subpar service. Lengthy wait times and inattentive staff overshadow the restaurant’s culinary strengths. While the food alone might tempt a return visit, the prospect of enduring such service makes it a reluctant consideration.

Read moreI saw this place and even though it was a Mexican taco house with the name "Sugar" I decided to give it a try. Nice atmosphere. Very nice camarera (waitress). They didn't offer the $16.50 endless taco option. Being hungry I ordered the burger, horchata and tres leche.
The burger: was a nice bun, pre frozen patty (like store bought with the ruffle shape). Skimpy lettuce and thin slice of (avacado?). The french fries served with it was very stingy (maybe bettween a McDonald's small, or less than a medium size).
I was expecting a Mexican seasoning or something in the patty.
The Horchata: I asked my camarera if it was bottled. If it was better than what I make from scratch at home. I received it. It was okay. But instead of being authentic, it was a powder mix. I had a bottled brand that tasted better.
The Tres Leche cake: This Is one of my favourite cakes. Imagine a perfect sponge like cake with 3 types of milk. Like a sweet cream liquid. The liquid is poured on the cake and sits for a couple days. This allows the cake to take on a rich and creamy moist to the touch cake where cutting with a fork causes the milk mixture to ooze out of the sponge cake.
This was the expectation. What I got for what was expected was a dry sponge cake garnished with a pineapple ring, and a cherry. A little of the milk mixture poured on the top (just a little) and a stingy serving of milk on the plate (for looks?).
After paying $35 here, I went home and cooked dinner with more flavour after my $35 snack at Azucar.
All in all I don't know the owner, but I suspect he may be cutting corners and is not very generous based on portion sizes and food quality.
My experience here I almost heard Gordon Ramsey commenting on the food as if he was on one of his kitchen nightmares show.
To the owner reading this: More generous portions, more authentic from scratch food will bring in the crowd. I was willing to go to sherwood park mexican place for authenticity but they were booked until 8:30pm when I called at 5pm. People will pay for authentic and generous filling portions. You can make this place more popular by word of mouth if you are worthy of people's...
Read moreI have been going to azucar for a long time but yesterday on the 21st of October there were few guards they were super violent I had a cardigan they FORCED me to take off . It’s not about paying them those lame 3$, it’s about that it was part of my outfit and they cannot demand me taking it off. After that me and my bf tried to breathe some air at around 1:50 and they didn’t let us out and the club was suppose to close at 2:30. So why not letting us out ? If your business wants to grow maybe update your centreal AC, people are dying sweating there. A fan isn’t enough. After the security guard wanted to fight my bf so badly this dumb w Canadian security that takes his job too serious as if he protects the president of America or something - those security guards need to chill out and relax and get themselves busy with other violent things and not take it out at work on people that just want to have a nice evening .I never had a problem like this before this was the first time bunch of new security guards that just were so violent it was disgusting and I can go with this matter to the court and sue them for touching me and my bf. After they kick us out they didn’t want to give me my cardigan back - after I asked many times to give me back an expensive cardigan they threw it outside and burned it with cigarettes. This will go to the police report and I will open a suing case against those VIOLENT security guards that don’t know how to treat women properly! Especially that I am a regular costumer ! I’m chocked and here’s some pictures of what they did to my possessions . As you can see this isn’t a coat so they don’t have to force people to pay for coat check ! Disgusting behaviour of western people...
