September 2023 It would appear that the music situation was adjusted. The selection of radio station is better, no more thumby rock, Volume on the patio is now lower to the point where one can have a conversation or simply quiet time. Thanks to management. Although no music would be much nicer. Now we can enjoy the fabulous coffee at Waves in relative peace again!👍 Update , July 2023: In response to the kind words from the owner about my recent update, I had to pay them another visit. Cleanliness was definitely improved. Music unfortunately continues to be a challenge, especially on the patio. There are new umbrellas which makes the patio inviting on warm days but the chairs are mostly empty because of the silly music relentlessly playing. It interferes with the ambience outside so much that there are always more customers inside than outside no matter how nice the weather is. For the life of me, I don't understand why a coffee place like this must play any music at all. In Italy where espresso was invented you never hear music at all in any Cafe. People don't go-to a Cafe to hear music and certainly will not stop coming if there is no music. There are those however, like me, who will stop coming because of the music. Update: May 2023 I had to update this review, sadly downwards. My origonal review was 5 stars. However I now give it 3 stars only. While the coffee drinks are still very good, the space is not kept as clean and tidy as before, with seemingly always overflowing garbage can outside, dirty floors and coffee stains on the patio. Washrooms are not as clean as they used to be. Even the music is loud now and rather annoying selection. Too bad. I am no longer a big fan. In my origonal review I picked Waves espresso drinks as the best in edmonton. That did not change much but this west side location has deteriorated and i can no longer recommend it. Our first time trying waves, we only came cause we wanted breakfast sandwiches or something, we go through the drive thru, we are reading the menu and they already sound annoyed that we are there to order, we ask for breakfast bagels and she’s like uhm.. and then disappears for a minute then comes back and sounds annoyed and we finish our order, ($18 for 2 bagels) they give us the sandwiches and we are about to ask for napkins and hot sauce and Madison runs away, we wait by the window for 5 minutes as 2 different employees pass us, Madison finally comes back and seems annoyed that we’re still there. She’s like “can I help you???!” We ask if they have hot sauce, she seems so annoyed, we ask if they have ketchup and she looks at me like I’m a crazy person and then she’s like yeahhh noo in a really rude tone and then we ask if we could please have napkins and she’s like I guess. Can I just say that this is THE BEST cafe in Edmonton! Although it’s a bit small in space, the staff never fails to go out of their way to provide the best service! The place is always clean, washroom is spotless and tidy, and lobby is well maintained. It’s also a really great place to study and do schoolwork as a student, highly recommend! I also just wanted to express my gratitude to the male worker who went out of his way to help my friend with Wi-Fi issues, and even went ahead to lower the blinds down when I was being blinded by the light; it was truly appreciated.
